DONALD MacKINNON Ntspetirqrcar-old Donald Mac- Klnnon, one o! a large family, was born at West Rcyaltu in the year I863. This veteran came from a long-lived family tree. most o! them passing the allotted threa score years and ten. when Mr, MacKlnnon took up residence at North River, he fol- lowed the lite oi a firmer and married the sweetheart a! his youth, Miss Maud Williams at East Wiltshlre. Two children were born to this union, Stella and Pearl, both at whom are living in this Province. Most persons can recall at least one important and exciting chap- ter in their lite, bucfew indeed have had such a hectic experience as that which betfeli Donald Mac- Kinnon during the hever-to-be- forgotten days of the Klondike gold rush. In the spring o1 i090. an ex- pedition heeded by Barret Hen- derson and iinarued by the late Richard ‘Heartz oi Charlottetown was organized for the purpose a! getting a herd at cattle to time hungry people o! Dawson Oity. Butchers were paying one dollar per pound for beet on the hood. Hearts had hopes of making a ior- tune out o! the venture. providing everything went according to plans. With Barret Henderson went Donald MacKlnnon and another Islander, by the name oi Jacob Oorrlgan. All three were picked for their physical iitness and un- daunted courage. To these three had hem assigned a job that few men would care to undertake. The herd. consisting of some sixty odd steers, were picked up " near the foothills o-t Alberta. How Henderson managed to get the herd from the Prairies to Datwson City is a story that has ie-w equals in the annals o! the Canadian his- iory. and one which cannot be told in a brie! sketch such as this. But reach their destination they did alter almost eight months oi heart-breaking experiences. The last leg of that. memorable trek was when they reached the Yukon. put the animals aboard rafts and then floated down stream to Daw- son. the "Lend of Promise." Mr MacKinnon still recalls quits clear- ly the day they reached their des- tination. a trio oi bearded. hard- blttsn men. whose past hardships had made them tough as cvris. The whole tctwn turned out to wvclcrtne the adventures and to bless them for having brought this badly needed meat to the hungry city. Fifty thousand dollars, ell weigh- ed out in gold dust. was the sm- ount rweived for the herd. While in Danvson Mr. MacKin- non saw Robert Service, the poet o4! the Yukon, and also Klondike Kate, famous Queen oi the gold camrp. Then he returned to the Gar- den of the Gulf where he has liv- ed ever since. But Donald oiten alts and dreams 0d the men and women he saw in the Northland. dreams of the dance halls, the saloons. the gambling rooms, and the dancing belles. where money was tossed about with reckless aban- don. But he likes best to narrate the story about Henderson, Cor- rigan and himself. as he is the only survivor o! that little known-l expedition.
