Mr. cordon n, Stewart of the Diminloll Seed Branch at Calgary tells in a recent issue of the ‘Western Farmer. of a weed burvey of the four western provinces. Seventy-four fields were selected, and 573 samples of soil were taken and examined. Of these. 191 samples were taken from the surface, and others running down to seven inches. Practically the same number of weed seeds were found in each’ inch of soil examined-about 20,000 to the square yard for each inch in depth. With such seeding u this. it can scarcely be wondered at that the weeds are always with us. How can weeds be eradicated?" There are several standard ways, and all require close attention. The first is the sowing of clean seed. If the farmer deliberately puts weed seeds in his soil, he can. o! course, not ex- pect to escape the scourge he is en- couraging. The second method is cul- tlvatlon-summer-fallowing or the use of special machinery. -'I‘hs third is crop rotation, including-what, the prairie farmer doesn't nluch like-a pasture rotation. with cattle or sllecP to eat down the herbage and prevent weed seeds from developing.
