A delightful lecture on Japan, il-
lustrated by la.ntern slides was given
last night in Heartz Memorial Hall
by Rev. Dr. Clarence MacKinnon.
Principal of the _Divinity Hall at
Pine Hill Theological Seminary.
The lecture was proceeded by bi-lei
devotional exercises, conducted by
Rev. H. Johnson.
In the course Of his most interest-
ing address, the speaker stressed the
(act thaf, the Japanese were diffi-
cult to understand, their way of do-
ng things being. in many cases, ex-
actly opposite ic our own. ‘
They have great difficulty. in speak-
‘ng in distinguishing between "l"
and "r?’. For instance, s. missionary
was somewhat puzzled on being told
that s. certain heap of small stones
had some from the “iiver." the speak-
er meaning "river" of course,
In building a house, they begin
with the roof and work down. Thu
allows them to go oil with ohelrwork
even in the rain.
Dr. MacKinnon went on to give
other interesting examlpes of these
differences. Their corkscrews, gim-
lets. etc., tum the opposite way to
