tralia, of Archbishop Mannix. who
four years ago created a great iurore
by his outspoken criticism of Great
Britain over the failure of the Irish
Republic plan.
Mannlx was a firm advocate of
complete independence and a repub-
lican form of government for Ire-
land. In 1920 the British govern-
ment. under Lloyd George prevented
him from going to Dublin. The Ar-
ehbishop's visit to Ireland in 1925
followed a. Holy Year pilgrimage to
Rome from Australia. whcré he had
been a life long resident. He visited
many parts of Southern Ireland and
stirred up opposition to any settle-
ment of the Irish question outside of
complete independence but he was
barred from Ulster by the North ke-
land Government. .

of liquor in New Brunswick came into
force towards the end of the year 1927
and the first report of a full year‘s
operations under this legislation has
just been issued by the Liquor Con-
trol Board of that province. On the
facts and figures there presented by
the chairman of the Board, Mr. R.. G.
Fulton, a sane conclusion would seein
to be that, from the standpoint of
temperanee, properly controlled liquor
sales are less mischievious in their re-
sults than those which had to be re-
corded under a law which prohibited
the sale of liquor. I
During the fiscal year under review.
the New Brunswick Liquor Board
made a not proht of 81.00.933. Total
sales in that period were $3,562.30!
and the percentage of profit was ac-
tually the highest of my government

LONDON. Jan. 25-For the first
time throughout the illness of the
King only one doctor tonight was in
attendance iibcn His Majesty. Ai-
though no medical bulletin was is-
sued it was stated that the King's
progress was being maintained.
Sir Stanley Hewett who had been
in attendance since the beginning of
the illness was at his home with a
cold and did not go to Buckingham
Palace dtlrilig the day. Lord Dawson
of Penn, the other of the chief phy-
sicians, attended the King alone and
left the Palace, after a full hour‘s
visit. For the first time in a very
long period no doctor slept at the
Palace.
Queen Mary drove to Windsor Cas-
tle again today and stayed for lunch
driving back in the afternoon. It is
understood that the King’s removal
to the seaside resort of Bognor will
be settled within a few days. It is
expected that Hia Majesty may stay
there about three months.

There was held last night in their
omco I- meeting of the executive of
the Retail Merchants Association.
some of the leading Charlotte-
town groceis and prominent butter
makers were in attendance to dis-
cuss the effect cf the sale of New
Zealand butter in our Island indus-
try. Thc chair was occupied by Mr.
W. A. Stewart, the president of the
Association.
The President in opening the meet-
ing said he did not see why any ooh-
eefn should bring foreign bmter into
the province. If it were largely used,
it was ,certain the farmers would be
affected. Ultimately people would be
thrown out of employment and every
citizen of the country would feel the
effects.
Mr. Percy Simmons agreed with the
president that it would ,affect the
producers of dairy products. We
were an exporting community in
dairy products. and there was really
no reason why buzbter made outside
should be brought into 'the coimlity.
He quoted from an article by Prof.
H. H. Dean in the Canadian Dairy
and Ice Cream Journal in which he
stated that the impositkm of a tar-
iff on the imports of foreign butter
would largely incmsae production in
1929. other startements in the ‘No.9

Canada. said Mr. Simmons' can
produce enough butter for her own
consumption. but our farrggs can
out wedges  butter com-
pete with the ew Zealand product

The butter was brought here

sold here only, so far as was known,
by a recently established branch of
an out oi town firm. It was sold in
Sydney at 430. per lb. and in Char-
lottetown at 44c. The preferential
tsrlif admits of its admission si: lc.
per lb. which, before the trade treaty
was fc. per lb. In New Zealand, to
make the compettiion even more un-
fair, the Government bonused the
producer. This competition will hit
the creamer-ies quite hard, and the
farmer is the man who will suffer
in ti-lo end.
There wus. however. a chance that,
owing to the drouth in Australia. that
country would produce very little but-

The Minister of Immigration is silent on the joint letter of protest made
by the C. P. R./and C. N. R.. railways in respect of the reduction of the quota
of 30 percent. on people from nonpreferred European countries. The Rail-
way Department has nothing to say regarding the opposition of the canadian
National Railways to the proposed extension of C. P. Ii.. lines into what Sir
Henry Thornton regards as territory exclusively the preserve of the latter.
It is understood that statements from both departments will be forthcoming

THE CAR FERRY
Yesterday ice conditions at the
Capes had become very much easier.
In fact, it is stated that the heavy ice
has largely drifted away, and what is
left is loose, and easily got through.
The car ferry in consequence, was
able to run on schedule time. ln the
morning she left Borden at 9.05 and
arrived at Tormentine at 10.15. In
making her return trip in the after-
noon, she left Tormentlne at 3.10 and
arrived at Borden at 4.30. The malls
and passengers reached the city at
0.50.
THE AEROPLANE
The aeroplane arrived on her first
trip this moming at 9.115 a. m., having
left Moncton at ii a. m. She brought
over 419 lbs. of letter and paper mail.
At 10.03 she left for Bummarside, tak-
ing with her as a passenger Mr. Vic

possibilities for trade between Canada
Bermuda and the British West Indies
would seem to be very great, stated
Senator J. B. Casgrain of Montreal
who with Mrs. Casgrain was a pas-
senger on one of the Canadian Nu-
tional steamships arriving at Halifax
last night from Bermuda. Bcnctol'
Casgrain was greatly impressed with
the new service recently inaugurated
by the Canadian National steamship
which hc stated should lead to great-
er trade. between Canada and the
Islands of Carribean. One of the
things which Senator Casgrain pare
ticularly noticed was the growing
French Canadian Colony in Bermuda.
Also as a passenger by this vessel
was John O‘Brien manager of tho
famous mountain resort in the Cau-
adian Rockies, Jasper Park Lodge,
owned and operated by the National
System and Mrs. O'Brien. Mr. 0'-
Brien went as fer south as Kingston
which he declared was one of the
most progressive of the West Indian
