I°ll sing you a song of the sea, With the waves sparkling ‘bright, And the breeze blowing light, And our dear native land on the lee, How sweet is the song of the sea! With friends looking out on the quay, Their kerchiefs and hands waving free, And bright smiles and welcome for thee. How sweet! how sweet! How sweet is the song of the sea! I'll sing you a song of the sea, When the sky lowers dark O'er the plague-stricken barque, As she drifts o’er the desolate sea, How sad is the song of the sea. When overhead hangs the dim cloud, Like a pall o’er the dead sailor's shroud, As he sinks in the vast wand'ring sea. How sad! how sad! How sadis the song of the sea, I'll sing you a song of the sea, When the fierce lightnings flash, And the stormy waves dasb, And the rocky shore looms on tue lea. How dread is the song of the sea! When the hearts of the bravest will quail, As they shrink from the furious gale, And the wrath of the menacing sea, How dread! how dread ! How dread is the song of the sea! Shark Fishing. A veteran New York fisherman says: “shark fishing pays, and it’s great fuu fora green hand. The business is carried on principally for the oil and fins” A big place for them is the White Sea, and again in Iceland. The sharks they get there are from thirty to fifty feet long. Sometimes they run in around the Grand Bank and are caught. About four barrels of oil is the average froma good-sized fellow. My shark fishing was all done near New Smyrna; Florida. Some sharks would give half a barrel of oil, but they wore yenerally under fifteen feet. We} usaaily hired trom fifteen to twenty darkies to dothe pailiog and hauling, and camped oul during the months of July, August and September, moviog up and down whenever the biting was poor, We carried our pots and things along anddried out the livers, and shipped the oil by a smack up to Fernandina, where it wasall bought by one man Idon'ti}koow what he did with it. Some said he sold it for cod liver oi), We used aregular hook and line, only it wasa rope, and the hook was a footlong, and made fast to the line by a three foot chain. Fish bait was the best. We kept about tweatv of these lines over all the time at regular intervals along wherever the water deepened quick from the shore. All the lines were about fifty yards long. Sometimes they fool over the buit, but generally a big shark will nose it once or “twice, and then suck itup and move off, swallowing the bait as he goes. You want to give him about fifteen feet of rope, and when he hauls the line tant all jerk together. Theo the work commences—fun some people callit. As soon as he feels the hook he makes a big rush that will start ten or fifteen men, and I’ve seen tive jerked right iato the water at the start. Up and down he goes, some- times jumping into the air and trying to shake out the hook, and some old fellows will swim right for you and try to bite the line. In India they catch the sharks for their fins and send them to China, where they make them into soup.’ [nan interesting article on shark fishing, in Frank Leslie’s Iliustrated Newsp: iper, we learn that the “capacity ot some of these sea-wonders is enor- mous. ‘The writer caught one at Tor- tugas, Fla., that weighed about 900 pounds. It was a while shark, and for a long time had lived around the slaughter-house located on the edge of the channel. It took about twenty men to get him in ultimately, In the sto mach was found the skull and horns of a steer that had been thrown over the day before, three hoofs, besides a heter- ogeneous mass of old rope, seaweed, and two or three old tin cans that perhaps retained some of the meats that had been packed in them. The jaw was saved. It had eight rows of serrated teeth, and fitted over a man’s body easily. Itis nowin the Museum of History, Central Park. The fossil sharks of the tertiary period grew to an enormous length, exceeding 150 feet. At Charleston,S. C., their teeth are feund buried i in vast quantities, some measiring seven feet in length. A horse and cart could easily have driven into the mouths of these monsters, that were fittiag representatives of the age vf expansion in which they lived. — Cape Ann Advertiser. +a A Lover's Fatal Blunder. ‘‘Louise,” said he, as they sat in the parlor together a few evenings before the rising of the honeymoon—“I ought to tell you that | belongto «a Masonic lodge, and have to tend its sessions ; so dearest, when we are married you musn’t fret if some evening I have to be away from my little wifey-pifey.” And the designing villain chuckled at his prudence. “Of course I won’t, William,” she said softly ; “how many lodges do you belong to?” “Only one, darling,’ ’ he answered, ‘And when does it meet } How often!
