Reading of the wonderful success re- sulting from the dyking of mai-sues in Nova Scotia and other places, seve- ral of the most enterprising and up-to- date farmers of Bedeque, conceived the idea that, in the same irariner, they could also take advantage of the great area ef marsh land whit; ex'ended around them in every dii tion. Ac- cordingly during the winter and spring of 1897, the vast ex- tent of marsh land bordering along Bradsha.w’s creek, amounting to some 120 acres, were preserved from the encroachment of the sea by means of a dy ke and aboiteau, notwithstanding the opposition of many who now see the good results of this work. The re- markable success that has attended the dyking of these marshes, has been al- ready noted in THE Guanniait. Marsh land that before had been considered of little value,is nowthe moat valuable part of the farm. The growth and quality of the marsh hay has been doubled, and to be convinced of ite great eflioiency ee winter food, one has only to visit the well _stocked barns of the Bedeqne farmers and compare their sleek and well fed cattle with those of* the less fortunate farmers, who are compelled ro feed their cattle on straw. Upland hav and clover have been suc- cessfully grown, and several marsh owners have already seeded down ell their -inarsli lands. The Bedeque marshes, moreover, are of the best quality and the resources are al- most unlimited. and it is believed that, in a few years. oats, potatoes and the other upland crops will he success- fully and more 'cheaply raised. Seeing such good results arise from a practically small outlay, and deter- mining not to be behind their neighbors in such matters the marsh owners on the Dunk River resolved that they would also protect their marshes in like manner, and in the winter of 1853 prepared to build a dyke and aboiteau. An early spring put an end to the pile driving, however. and the dyking was completed that summer. This win- ter the pile driving was resumed and the result is not only a credit to the contractors, Messrs. Lord & Lord, but also to the marsh-owners and projectors of the scheme. _ The aboiteau is about 100' feet in length, consisting of two rows of piles driven atan angle of about 75 degrees, about 8 ft apart at the top of the water and about 14 at the bottom. The space between the two rows is being filled with mud and it is proposed to protect the aboiteou from the freshets and ice during the spring, by loose stones and brush piled against the side of the aboiteau. This new dike encloses some 70 acres of marsh land and including those marshes which are now enclosed by the dry dyke _thereis a matter ef some 920 E acres of good marsh land protected fi-an the ravages of water.
