At the graduation exercises of the Prince County Hospital held last night in the Summerside High school auditorium. five student nurses received their pins and dip- lomas from the superintendent. Mrs. Margaret Boehner. The five who graduated were: Marguerite Helen McCai-vllle. Kinkora. Kathleen Jean Campbell. Mon- tague. Eileen Jenkins. Summerside. Jean Isabelle Johnstom-Suflolk. Zella MacDonald. Ellerslie. The exercises were presided over by Mr. W. E. Warby, chairman of the Board of ‘Trustees. who in ad- dressing the audience extended first his congratulations to the graduates on the completion of their course and wished them every success. V lVLr. Darby said that the Prince County Hospital was fortunate iii- deed in securing the services of the present Superintendent, Mrs. Boehner. and to her and to the fine staff of nurses under her he gave credit for the present amo th working conditions which prev ll there and the cordial relations which exist between the staff and the Board of Directors. The financial condition of the hospital has improved during the past year and there was a general improvement in the interior de- coration of the enttre institution. He stated that during the year ending in 184B there had been twenty four hundred admissions as compared to twenty two hundred in i947. 016 babies had been born this year which was an increase of 72 over last year. New Hospital Plano Mr. Darby then went on to deal with the matter of the new hos- pltal on which work had begun and ivas later stopped for the time being. He said that many have been wondering why this condition existed and the work had not proceeded. The amount received. he said. from the public subscription campaign and the grant from the Town of Summer- alde amounted to $300,000. Plans and specifications were drawn up which showed an estimated colt of 0700.000 for the new hospital and the directors planned on bor- rowing $500000 by Wall 0! Wild issue. Mr. Darby stated that later figures submitted showed the coat would be several thousand dollars more than the original estimate and while the directors had based their cost on figures which they had every reason to consider aa reliable. under the circumstances. they did the only possible thing, they stopped the work. Mr. Darby went on tn say "we will have to revise our plans w do without some things. things a! course which would not impair the general efficiency of the new hospital." He further explained that the additional requiredwredlt which will be sought will be b! trustees inveatmezt bonds anu in order to place the bonds in this category it was neceasa y lo wait until Parliament DIGJIIIBOG the necessary legtalationto put this in effect. Whenjll this had been ironed out and satisfactory ar- rangement: mode with the nond- ing companies he aaid no believed that an iflltftlltion would “in! bf which the people of Prince (Minty might well be proud. In running up nil report he ltatad that he did not think the people of Prince County had given thtir full support to the campaign Had they really supported the Graduation Exercises At Prince County Hospital Yesterday, drive. he said. to the extent they could have $700,000 instead of 8300.000 would have been raised. In» closing he paid high tribute to the ladies aid of the hospital. the Octo Club and the various Womensfnstitutes who ivorked so vizell in the interests of the hospital. Mayor Arneit On behalf of the Town of Surn- izlerside His Worship Mayor J. F Arnett extended hearty congratu- lation to the class and expressed his belief that in their future ivork they would meet their many re- sponsibilities bravely. Dr. John lllacNelil Dr. John MacNeill gave 'a brief but very comprehensive history of the hospital from the day in 1912 it was endowed by the late Thom- as. Ramsay with the surn of 520.000 ‘and officially opened by the Duke of Connaught, Governor General of Canada at that time. Prizes were presented by Dr. MacNeill from the medical staff and by Mrs. Heath Strong from the Ladies Aid. The Florence Nlghtengala pledge was adminis- tered to the graduates by Rev. Howard Wight and the nurses were presented with a beautiful bou- - quet of flowers in a most charm- ing manner by little Miss Jennifer Tanton. daughter of Dr. and Mls. Clara Tanton. ' - Dr. L. G. Dewar The graduating class was ad- dressed by Dr. L. G. Dewar. O‘- Leary. who very impressively dealt with the high ideals of the nurs- ing profession. He urged them never to forget the debt of grati- tude they owed to their parents and_ their instructors and went on to enume ate the many fields of endeavor open to them and con- cluded hls remarks by reminding them that no matter what branch of the nursing profession they might choose that honesty ivas the best policy and that they must. never at liflV time under any cir- cumstances betray a confidence imposed in them. Pleasing epcclaitics consisting r-f vocal solos bv Miss lvfiirguerlte Sliaw with Miss Nellie lilorrlson. pianist and piano duets by Mrs. Harold Huestls and daughter Mary were much enjoyed by the large audience. ‘The valedlctorlan was Miss Jean Johnston.
