I-‘s SOHKERGIAL TAX- _ (From St. John Record.) P, E. I.’s commercial tax is again en- gaging the attention of the Montreal Subject: Ma thew 19-41. “Ninevgli Board M Trade’ “Pd la" "wk tho; body - a d drafted a memorial to the governor general asking that the government dis- allow the recent law passed by the leg- islature ol P. E. I. This act was pass- ed on the 2&th of May. 1898 and it was designated as an amendment to the evi. dence act and provided that creditors not residing in the province, the amount of indeptedness for goods sold unless the creditors could prove that the travel- lers who sold the good had duly taken out a commercial license. The protest of the Montreal Board_is made on the grounds that the law is un- righteous, that it provides"dishonest traders in the province of P. I. with a method whereby they can legally re- pudiate payment of their just debts, and moreover it is an unlawful attempt to enforce payment of a most undesirable tax on commercial travellers. The statement is already made that it is be- lieved that in its effect upon the holders, of promisory notes this law is in oppo- sitton to the rights given by the Domin- ion legislutuie to the holders of such notes. Ot course .what applies to Montreal applies with equal force to the whole- sale traders of other provinces. The matter we believe has been called to the attention of our Board of Trade but What action was taken is not known at the present moment. Certainly the commercial traveller who goes to P. E. I. to do business, if he would avoid the shoals of illegality and the consequence to his firm must be provided with the necessary certificate for doing business, and it may also he noted that, he has got to pay pretty well for the privilege.
