It thus appears that while New Yerk is an exceedingly import- ant stace, it would not be indispensable under the conditions named, though it would not be safe to trust entirely to the chance of such good fortune. The Demo. crats, on the contrary, starting in the table with 142 votes, could get their needed sixty votes by snecess in New York, Indiana and Virginia, where the contest is sure to be sharp.” A few evenings ago the news came over the sea that Taglioni was dead. The Church of England Temperance Society has offered two prizes—one of $3,500 and the other of $1,000—for common drinks that can be used as substitutes or beer. The results of Easter meetings through- out Nova Scotia speak of a satisfactory state of things. In many cases salaries have been raised, and in many others the churches show a balance on the right side. In all parts the Church of England is steadily progressing. Hugh C. Childers, Chancellor of the Exchequery to lower the existing standard. lt appears that in this scheme of debasement Mr. Childers stands alone, his confr-res of the the cabinet, Mr. Glad- stone excepted, having, either through indifference or in a spirit of friendship, allowed him to push the matter to its present stage. The premier, who long ago earned for himself the reputation of being the greatest budyet financier which Eng- land has ever produced, and who undoubvely understands public feeling on national money mattera better than anyone living, repeatedly warned Mr. Childers tha’ an at- tempt to meddle with the gold coinage of the country would raise a tempest among the worxirg people and the smail shop keepers which he would find difficult to allay. Thousands of people in Great Britain never reach a beyond the possession of a sovereign or ‘quid,’ as it is vnlyarly called, and an effirt to destroy the vague but sacred British constitution would not be half so! great a sin in their eyes as the injection of one more grain of alloy into their favorite coin. —-----20e——__-_—_—. The German police have entered upon a general and concerted movement against ali socialistic societies throughout the empire. The actinn of the pohee has been, in nearly every case, carried out within the technicalities of law, but gross injustice has characterised their con- duct in many of their acts of suppression of free puble discussion, and the liberal press has felt compelled, from motives of prudence, to allow even these to pass with- out comment. +r - On the oecasion of his retiring from the ‘ditorial management of the Moncton | Transcript, J.E B.
