v I THE CADRE, TUES., SEPT. 17, 1974,-Page 8 Teeny-Tiny Essay 1ulhfifi r . My first effort in this teeny-tiny essay is to ex- tend a welcome to all who came or came back to U.P. E.I. It is a brave and heroic deed of derring— do, you know. For those‘ who are sane you are ris— king you sanity and for those who are insane you are risking the possibil— ity of actually belonging. Universities as a whole ' breed a very deadly dis- ease and U.P.E.I. excells .in»this field. In fact this is the only area in- which most students get an A. Sometimes it's in— curable and when the stu- dent leaves the univer— sity it cripple's that st— udents capabilities in the next environment. U.P.E.I. is wonderful though. Academically it believes in not being "too" academic. The pro- fessors are good and can teach the student if only they wanted to. Most of the professors received good solid academics but too many are resigning themselves by throwing their hands up in the air (traditional mannerisms of professors) and saying students are really not capable of learning what they have to offer. There are some fine minds here in both faculty population and student population. Students are lazy in that they don't want academics and professors are just as lazy in that they ‘0 can't be bothered_to ch— allenge these students stodgy minds — made more stodgy by the minute by being able to pull off 60's and 70's with "no sweat”. In other words the challenge is not there - don't quote me though. ’ Socially speaking U.P.E.I. is a marvel. The pass—word to a social function is booze. Won- derful alcohol! Alcohol runs U.P.E.I. Students, faculty and administration. - but keep it quiet will ~> . , an, . .. "Of course, we’re making sacrifices —- why, I'll have you know this room is pmcisely as degraqu you? It's a bush, hush secret that everyone knows but deliberately and eff- ectively puts blinkers over their eyes so as to avoid seeing it. Are we at U.P.E.I. horses, mules, or just plain asses? The fun really begins with the administration. Or should that read "Save the best for the last". To administrate at U.P.E. ' I. you must be distrustful Senate committee Speaks * ' Last year, the Senate of U.P.E.I. appointed a committee to conduct a full review of the object ives of University edu- cation here on campus. After five years of oper- ation, in which a great deal of attention had to be focused on the estab- \r lishment of programs and procedures, Senate feels the time is right for a critical assessment of past performance. As well, the committee is analyzing present programs while trying to determine what the real needs of our stu- dents, faculty and comm—’ unity are, and will be in future years. Specific educational methods suit- able for our Island Uni— versity are to be ident- ified and recommended fo adoption. ' As can be seen, this and cheap because the Une iversity of Prince Edward Island is not an instition it's a business. Keep that in mind when you pay your fees and personal cheQues are not accepted, when a late registration fee of $5 a day is added on to the grand total, when ' students pay an outrageous price to live on campus and these very fees go up every year - but inflat- ion is terrible isn't it? t!. committee and its pro— ‘ ceedings, are or rather should be of grave concern to each and everyone of us. There is to be ample opportunity to students and faculty alike to share their views. Throughout the Fall semester the committee will be hosting discussions twice a week for faculty, and students. If you are interested, if you have an opinion, why not share it? These informal gatherings will provide and excellent opportunity. If inter- ested, drop your name off to Jane at the Student Union office. > Members of the committee on University Objectives include Dr. Leon Loucks, Associate Professor of Chemistry; Dr. Mujeéb—ur— Rahman,Assistant professor» of Psychology; and Barb Stevenson, a Junior in the ‘ B.B.A. program. You can get in touch with our student representative, Barb Stevenson, through the Student Union office.
