Frosh Week Smashing Success! Wwow!! FROSH WEEK WAS A SMASH! You just have to ask any of the 310 Freshmen who registered for it! The Barn was hopping for three—full days as this year’s newest students showed us their spirit and had the most fun they’ve ever had. Casino Night on Monday was a great success! During the auc- tion afterward, Steven Ramsay, a lst year Engineering student was the winner of a free course! Tuesday Night & Wednesday Night were also a hit; especially with the music of Counting Zero on Wednesday evening! Mocktails were very popu- lar with all Freshmen, with the SDES and Panther Piss on top. Wednesday was Shinerama | day and students raised a to- tal of $3800.00 which resulted in John MacDonald, Shinerama Chairman, and Dean MacMillan, \ SU President dying their hair green. So if you missed Frosh Week — don’t worry. It’s just the beginning of what is going to be an incredible University year! The Barn has events lined up to keep the campus hopping and if Frosh Week is any indication these events will be jam-packed! Don’t miss them! Over the past seven years we have simulated countries from Africa, Latin America, Asia, and | Eastern Europe. The delegates have played a diplomatic role in every committee or organization simulated. In the past, UPEI has usu- _ ally sent about 25 students each year. This year, we are expect- ing to expand the UPEI delega- tion to 35. We are hoping to rep- resent two countries: one from the First World (Spain, Greece, or Australia as examples) and one from the Third World (ie. Brazil, Nigeria, or India). — Any interested students who wish to become part of the del- egation must be fully committed to the course (Political Studies 462) and must participate in all activities such as fund raising and _ Meetings. Students will learn a great deal from this course such as studying the history and char- ter of the United Nations, prac- ticing debating techniques, draft- ing resolutions and policy papers, learning the history, policies and economics of the country repre- sented, studying how diplomatic blocs, such as Asia and Africa, work in a committee, and finally, how to think and act like a dele- gate of the particular country. The major fund raising event is the annual banquet — this year to be held on Friday, March 6 1989. This year we are very pleased to have a distinguished guest speaker - Noam Choamsky. The Model UN course accepts students from most departments. We encourage any interested stu- dents to attend the organiza- tional and information meeting on Monday, September 26 at 6:00 in the Robertson Library (watch for posters for precise location). Application forms will be handed out at this meeting.
