The National Good Roads Associ- ation is being co-operated with by the railways. The farmers want better roads in order to facilitate the hauling of their products to the railway stations and the city markets( _Tlie rai1v¥Q» people lmow ‘tint thc w`a`gcn~ roads in-c 'uic_sl1-import ant and necessary feeders to the steel roads- J ost now the Illinois Central Railway together with the National Good Roads Association have entered upon a plan to be put in operation next month by which sections ot good roads at various focal po nts between Chicago -and New Orleans will be constructed as object lessons. ‘ The railway ~will convey tree all the nec- essary plant to the various points where operations will be carried on. The com- panies which eell road-making machines will supply the necessary machinery and expert operators. Each community will be expected to supply other labor. teams and materials required. Then the operations will be begun. According as the experts find the material at the place of operation to be best adapted they _will proceed to constructs. model dirt road, to cost $500per mile, or a gravel road costing $156) per mile, of a. mscadamized road costing $3,000 per mile. At each place of operations a convention of legislators, farmers and others will be hel'l at which good roads and how to make them will be discussed, and this with the expert work done will afford the best possible education in road making. The section of road constructed will also remain as a perpetual evidence ofthe value ofa. good, permanent wagon way. The Chicago Tribune tells that the movement creates great interest and that other railways will follow the example set by the Illinois Central. ._ ..@.-_->-_li It appears that Mr. Carne_gie’s promise of $100,000 for a library for Ottawa A-City was obtained on the oflicial application of the Mayor. There may be a valuable hint in the methods disclosed which proved so successful in the case of Ottawa.. ii Principal .Hadley of _ Yale University, speakingaiew nights is said to be the richest" church society in New England, said : - “We shall have an emperor in Wash- lngton within 25 years, unless we can create a public sentiment which, regard- less of legislation, will regulate the trusts." This is no doubt the form in which “imperialism " really threatens the Republic far more seriously than in the _acquisition of territories beyond the lseas. The nation readily takes up an idcl, mc, if cciy cc quickly discredit mic, as in the 'case of Dewey. Some day a popular idol, with the brain and will of a Napoleon, and backed by the trusts might become what he would in the United States. _ __*_____ _ Mr. R. E.
