The national temper of this couotry was beginning to give way under repeated warnings from the followers of both Lord Salisbury and Lord Rosebery that England must not do this and must not do that because of the danger of war. The ideais beginning to creep into the popular mind that this timid fear of war is itself aa invitation to war. It would be unfair to say that the Armenian agitation is subsiding on account of popu- lar terror inspired by the war bugaboo, but it is doubtless dying out and giving deal with by British statesmanship. It will require very genuine alarm to re- awaken popular interest inthe eastern situation, but it is generally believed in in that qaarter are close at hand. Mean- time there is evidence that some portion of the anti-Turkish indignation is turning into hatred of Germany. It is true that the chorus of abuse of England by the German press during the past few weeks has been peculiarly virulent and persis- tent. The reason is not really apparent, but there is no question that it is signifi- cant. The German official policy ie be~ coming daily more antagonistic to Great Britain. The Zanzibar incident is only a trifling indication of thia fact. Evgland is now openly accused in the German press of trying to seduce Italy from the triple alliance and of endeavoring to turn the new dual alliance in anti-German direc- tions. In fact, England has become Ger~ many’s dete noir, This country is at length giving evidence that Germavy’s feelings are cordially reciprocated. Even the Times has declared it this week in language as strong as its somewhat heavy dignity permits. The German press re- plies to-day with a fresh storm of protest. fhe North German Gazette easily pierces the Time’s armor with the sneer that “ if the organ of Cecil Rhodes and his accom~ plices can recollect its own attitude at the beginning Of the troublee in South Africa, it will not have far to seek for the reason why the German press has adopted a less friendJy tone toward England.” This war of words is no new thing, but it has reached a point where such outbursts of international bad feeling begin to have serious political significance and effect.” _—-—- + ee - —_-——_—_— ITEMS FRON THE WEST. (Summerside Farmer.) On Saturday jast Mr. Peter Millar, ot Bideford, showed us several wild. straw- berry plants with ripe strawberries grow- ing on them. The plants were dug on the 15th inst. This is very remarkable at this late season. Op Tuesday besides the regular supply of oysters the Northumberland took away a large quantity of wool sent from Charlottetown. Mr. Chas, A. McNutt also shipped 157 fine sheep and lambs for the Halifax market. On Wednesday morning Mr. S. H. Jones shipped 750 lambs, the most of them being gathered by Mesars. A ROMANTIC REASON, Some of the English newspapers refer to aromantic resson for Lord Rosebery’s retirement from the leadership of the Liberal party. The lady’s name is not mentioned, because that would involve the risk of incurring Royal displeasure. Here is @ paragraph vow going the rounds of the London provincial press:—* It is suid that Lord Rosebery approached the Queen some time ago, to obtain her assent to a marriage which he was anxious to contract. The Queen distinctly declined to give her sanction as long as the noble Lord remained gn.active party politician, There are revived indications of interest in the affair which nfay suggest that the step just taken isa prelude to another con- versation on the delicate subject. It would be imprudent to fay more than this or to mention the name of the lady in whom place to widespreai and hopeless! ber Majesty has taken so deep an iuterest. disgust over the whole _ situation{ Tlie atiachment is declared to be of some and over the manuer in which it is being duration, and to be mutual in character, as well as with the knowledge of several high placed personages.” —— - Tue PresipenriaL Coytest.—There are diplomatic circles that important events|8)x tickets in the field for the Presidency of the United States. A Portlaud, Me., despatch of the 19th states that more wheat has been put afloat in that harbor in the past forty-eight hours than ever before inasimilar length of time in the history of the port. The steam- ships Astoria, Glengorm Castle, Lindis~ farne and Henrietta, with wheat, and the Sierra Estrella, with flour, finished loading yesterday, and the Andreada got away the day before. ‘These ships carried nearly 20,000 long tons, or over 500,000 bashels of wheat, and have brought the October fleet up to fifteen vessels, with the month but little over half gone. The shipments to date are far in excess of those of any previous year, and with plenty of ships and plesty of wheat the good work will keep up. It is feared that the English potato crop will be disastrously affected by disease. From a large number of counties in Eng- land, Scotland und Wales have been received complaints of its ravages. Ireland does not appear to have suffered so much, but even from there come adverse reports. It is prophesied that unusually bigh prices will prevail in consequence.
