CHAKLUFFBIOWN Persecution Oi Protestants In Bulgaria M 'NIW YORK. Feb. 1d -- (APT —- A report which said "outright per- secution" of Bulgarian Protestants began in January, 1948. on I06"! orders from Communist central headquarters in Sofia was given the Associated Press today by a travel- ler returned from Europe. The traveller stipulated that neither his name nor his connec- tions nor the source of his report could be disclosed. The report, which said that be- tween 30 and 40 pastors of the Uni- ted Evangelical Church were jailed during 1948. was prompted by the Bulgarian Communist - dominated flvernmenta recent announcement of the imprisonment of 15 church leaders. They were charged with acting as spies for the United States and Britain. treason and violating the foreign currency law. (Represented in the United Evangelical Church are Congressist, Methodist, Baptist and Pentecostal faiths.) The report said the camps! n against the church got under way in January of last year when the Communist central headquarters in Sofia sent a directive for the "local agitators of the fniherland front (the Communist partyl." This directive, the report said. accused Evangelical pastors of in- dulging "in a police of undermining the foundations of the people's power. “These pastors intend to demobil- ize the people and to divert them from their only path to salvation, the path of' democracy and social- ism." the report quoted the direc- tive as saying. The directive then ordered "the local agitator-e" to go to "their meetings in church, and to ask them the following questions: "l. What is your attitude toward the building of our state and the power of the fatherland party? 2. 1f you have a positive attitude. how do you express it practically? 3. From where do you obtain the financial backing for your church and pastor? 4. What is your atti- tude toward the policy of the Anglo- Arnerlcans aiming to kindle n new war and to enslave foreign peo- ples‘! and 5. Why do you not speak out against inciters of war?" A number of arrests and beatings ofmclergymen followed. the report sa . In June, 1948, the report said. the government addressed a circu- lar letter of directive to all church leaders, that they should: 1. “Not criticize the govern- ment; support nationalism; acknow- ledge and preach that the state stands above the church; support fully Ill government measures and train theological students to fulfil government obligations." In addition, the directive stated that "since every Bulgarian is ex- pected to become n member of the fatherland front." all pastors and priests must join the groun and should counteract anti-Communist and anti-Russian propaganda from U" Pulpit and church press; should display portraits of govern- ment leaders in the churches and should preach love for state lead- era. "The churches made certain con- cessions through their publications and the ministry of foreign affairs assumed editorial control. "NOHQi-llclell. in July. 13 pastors were imprisoned and their corre- pondence taken by the govern. ment to be read. "By November be ween 3O and 40 in all were in pris n."
