EACH PLUG OF THE Myrtle Navy IS MARKED ? i. & B. IN BRONZ% ‘LETTERS. NONE OTHER GENUINE, The Markets. Tue chief point to note this week is the export of eggs for the British market. One of our city dealers is reported to have sent thither sixty cases, containing ninety thousand dozen, and others in town and country have forwarded consignments. The reduction of rates of freight by the Furness Line is one of the inducements to this coarse, and the mutual eatisfaction afforded by previous shipments another. But, of course, the export of eggs to England is stillin the experimental stage. In the meantime it is pleasing to note that the price of eggs has atiffsned a little. Ten cents a dozen are paid by dealers in Char- lottetowp, This price is well up to that paid in May during the years before the McKinley Bul, and it would not be very surprising soon to find our hen fruit as profitable ag ever it wes. As to potatoes, it seems most probable that hundreds of thousands of bushela now in the country will be fed to the piga or entirely lost. But wheat and corn are in better demand in England, and it seems not wihke!ly that oats will be a littlehigher by the time that our farmers have time to haul them to mirket. In St. John, dats fiom the Island are now quoted at from 43 to 45 cents per bushel. Street prices in Toronto are 33 to 34 cents, and in Mon- treal 35 to 36 cents. ln, o-eore Gbituary. Drew at her residence, Morell Rear, on Friday, 13th inst., after a short illness, Mary Phelan, beloved wife of Daniel Sin: nott, in the 67th year of her age, leaving a sorrowing husband, two sons and three daughters, together with a large circle of relatives and friends, to mourn their loss, The deceased emigrated from the County Kilkenny, Ireland, with her parents, the late Juhn and Hanorah Phelan, over sixty years agv, and settled in Morell, which was then a wilderness, and thus witnessed the privations of the early pioneers. The funerai took place on Sunday afternoon 3 from her late residence, and wasvery largely and infiuentially attended, showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held by all classes in the community. The cas- ket containing the deceased lady was of magnificent workmenship and elegantly mounted, At 2 30 the funeral procession left her late residence and proceeded t» St, Joseph’s Church, where the last sad rites were performed by Monsignor Macdonald. The ceremony was impressive aod solemn, .t the conclasion of which the funeral cor- tege re-formed and proceeded to the cemetery, where the deceased, beloved and respected fur her many virtues, was laid to rest. The world at best is full of care—perhaps ‘tis better so; But still we ray ““God’s will be dene, we're lone and sad to-day.” But hopes of meeting her in heaven will cheer us on our way; And, oh ! what joy then it will be, when all life’s cares are o’er, To meet our loved and cherished mother where death caa come no more. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Mr. Peters and the Scott Act. Sis,—The exposure made in your columns of the unprincipled conduct of the Government and its Leader has awakened great interest among the people in all parts of the Province. Even the strongest Grits have little to say in defence of the tyranni- cal actions of the Attorney General; and the opinion is universal that the first op- portunity will be taken by the people to sweep out of power the infamous combina- tion that accident has placed in control of the administration. Besides censuring the Government for the unbiushing bribery that is being practiced in the Public Works Department and in the Land Office, the Attorney General and his associates are also publicly condemned for the manner in which they are working the Scott Act in King’s County. Mr Peters posed asa great sup- porter of temperance and loudly proclaim- ed in his budget speech that they were voting #1000 to enforce the Canada Tem- perance Act. But how does his govern- ment carry out their promise? Do they show that they are friends of temperance ? No, I say they do not. They have appvuint- ed a man away up at the East Point as In- spector of licenses for the eastern districts, and, although every one knows that there are at least a dozen places around Souris and vicinity where liquor is openly sold in violation of the law, not one case has been prosecuted since the present Government came in. In the King’s County the W. ©. T. U. and in that section to carry out the law, and ned and persecuted until they have been compelled to give up selling. But to the eastward, where James R. McLean and Thomas Kickham are hoping to get sup- port at the next election, nothing has been done. If it is against the law svuthern part of King’s County to sell liquor, surely it is also against the law in be persecuted? [saw a communication signed ‘*Lot 65, Whether there is a person named ‘*Lot 65,” or whether your ndent wishes the public to infer that he voices Lot 65, Ido not know. But one thing I do know—before he voices Lot 65 he must stick to facts. Your correspondent is very much exercised ove‘) the cost of working the road machine. If he was as good at division as he ix at sul traction he could have found out what the— cost was per chain of road made by machine. | I stated that we had rounded 1300 chains, which would be less than 13 cents per chain. By an error in printing it was to read | 13 cents leas than the average cost of road¢ sold by me last spring. How your corres) spondent makes out that 23$ miles of road» that he claims are still undone would cost} $400 at the same rate, 1 would like him to explain, For yonr correspondeny’s informe | vion, | wish to state that all farmers, who! had teams working the machine, paid their horse tax which reduced the amount I had to diaw on the Goverpment to $12051, which makes the cost to the Government a small per. centage over 9} cents per chain. Your eorrespoadent stated that six~ huudred chairs were gon: over that needed no repairs. [ would jike bim to locate five chains of road that needed no repaire when I was appoiated , supervisor He also states that the worst) parts of the road are left undone. This I think is not strictly true, as I spread the work over aa much of the district as I could, and had the worst parts repaired, where they would accomodate the most people. Your correspondent tries to leave the im: teams. This I emphatically deny, as neither favored Liberal or Conservative, but got the best teams I could. I defy your correspoadent to come out over his. own, dolla: which was not for the public interest, | or whereI did not get value for the money paid.
