Generally speaking, these -_ should be staked. particularly in the 1 smaller garden where early fruit is wanted. The staked plants are a lit- tie more care but when grown in this way they require less room, will bear earlier and the fruit will be cleaner than if the vines are allow- er to sprawl on the ground. Inch square, six foot stakes should be used, and these should be driven about ten or twelve inches into the soil before the plants are set out. The stakes can be placed st two feet intervals each way. Select stelky plants and set about a. couple of inches away from the stake. When transplanting, it is advisable to put ' a pinch of nitrate of soda around “on plant to-give it an early start. and apply another dose of this fer- tililer. about a quarter of a teaspoon- fiil per plant, in a couple of weeks. Nip ofl all aide buds, allowing the main stem only to grow and tleing this loosely to the, stake at intervals of a foot with rlffia or soft twine. When the stem reaches the top of the stake, pinch oil’ to hurry ripen- ing of the later-formed fruit. To- matoes prefer warm. open soil, and require plenty of cultivation. If possible. water well during dry weather. ‘The side buds mentioned above are in the lxils of the leaves. The flower buds which do not spring from lxiis of the leaves, but from from the lid: of the stern, should of eourla bl retained.
