students by joining the sports clubs. Fencing is the only club for both sexes currently in operation. The male-only clubs are rugby and volleyball. Barb indicated the reason for this was no women have approached the department requesting the formation of female clubs. The last level of sports is varsity. Did you know for the first time in history there are more women’s ‘teams than men’s? None of these advances would be possible if the number of women participants were not rising, so significantly providing a welcoming atmosphere for females in athletics. Nevertheless, the recreation department would like to see more students taking advantage of the recreation department. The department is open to any suggestion and if there is sufficient interest and money within the budget they will do everything possible to help the students set up programs. Presently suggestions can be made to the department or through intramural representatives. So keep your eyes open for pick-up-lists. Positive female role models in professional sports have gone a long way to enhancing female participation in sports. Here at UPEI an enthusiastic attitude by the recreation department is doing a lot to enhance the opportunities for female Students in sports and promote physical fitness. Perhaps changing attitudes in students will help make female sports more marketable in the future. It has to start somewhere. Males in sport have a lengthy history.
