LONDON, Aug. 15-Florence Night- ingale, the famous nurse of the Ori: mean war, and the only woman who ever received the Order of Merit, died yesterday at her London home. Although an invalid for a long time, rarely leaving. her room. her death was somewhat unexpected. `A week ago she was quite ill, but improved and on Friday was cheer- ful. During the night alarming symptoms developed and she gradu- ally snnk. , Her funeral will 'be as quiet as pos- sible, in accordance with her wishes. On May 12th last she celebrated her ninetieth birthday and was the reci- pient of a congratulatory message from King George. 1 In the early part of her life she inspected schools and hospita'la_ in England"'and afterwards in all parts of Europa and finally decided to be- come a hospital nurse. She was es-1 pecially celebrated for her noble ser- vice at Scutari during the Crimean War, 1854-50. Her health suflered se- verely from the continued strain and her unseltish devotion. At the close of the war she was enabled by a testimonial fund to found an institution for the training of nurses, the Nightingale Home at St. Thomas Hospital. She was also the means of calling. attention to the unsanitary condition of camp hospitals, etc. _ LOW RATES TO TORONTO EXHIBITION .
