Tae loading of a vessel at Chicago for Glasgow has been a cause of great alarm to people in the State of New York. They see in the deepening of our canals the ruin of their own transit. Thomas Walker Dodd will have to walk out of the Government after the 14 November. Davies & Stewart as it is to break the law securing the In- dependence of Parliament! We thought Mr. William Brown, jr,, showed some fine tomatoes at the Exhibi- tion—as tine as could be raised on the Island—but it seems we were mistaken. He showed us on Saturdry a splendid specimen which beat them all hollow, perfectly ripe, which weighed 23 ounces and girt 14 inches. He informs us that he has green ones which are even larger. — Pat. Mr. Eptson seems bound to make him- self a public benefactor. His latest idea is to make electricity supply light for domes- tic use. He expects to be able to supply electric lights of moderate intensity in pri- vate houses, cheaper and better than the products of the gas companies. The ques- tion of expense he thinks he has solved; if so, the electric light will certainly supplant gas everywhere. The influence of this school is evidently making itself felt in the higher education of We think we are within the mark in saying that, during the last five years, a larger number have en- tered on a University course at King’s than during the fifteen years before; and what- ever tends to raise the standard of general education, particularly for those who may hereafter be expected to occupy a prominent position, is a benefit to the whole commun- ity. We wish St. Peter’s School success in its work, and are glad to learn that both the Boys’ School and the Preparatory School are fuller than at any time since they were first opened. Special Notices.
