This young msn before enlisting gave promise of a long sud successful career. ln 1l15 he received bis First Year Diploma from Prince of Wales College and lmmedhtely went to teach in Alberta. After four months teaching he felt the great need of soldiers for his country and he answered the call _by joining the British Navy. He served in petrol boats for a while and then was trans- ferred to a mlnesweeper, the Piethoe, which was sunk in the North Sea, Aprll 23rd. 1918. Pour on board were killed, the others were rescued by.nn- othsr mlnesweeper which was called to their help by the noise of the ex- plosion. Among these was Seaman Desltoches who clung to a piece -of the wreck for 35 minutes. The poison- ed water, which filled his lungs caus- ed a disease which the best human skill was unable to cure. i-le was sent to six hospitals where different treat- ments were tried. After two operat- ions, when part of his left lung was removed. the doctors thought he would recover but once again human hopes proved vain. A third attack, longer and more painful, came on and his weakened body could not stand it. Another victim was sacrific- ed to German cruelty, another name was added to Canads’s honor roll. Three years ago he had willingly giv- en up home and happiness and now at the early age of twenty three he brav- ely gave up bis' life. ln his last letter written Sept. lst, be says:- “Dear Mother, do not worry, if God calls me I am ready. He gives and He takes away." What consoling words for his family in their hour of trial. Besides his father and mother he leaves to mourn him four brothers and one sister: Sylvere in St. Duns- tan’s University, Antoinette teacher ln the Normal School, Willie, And- rew and Ben at home, To all of these the Guardian extends deepest sympa~ thy for the loss of a dutiful son and a loving brother.
