Wave, the teeny-bopper band with the catchy hip-hop tunes will be spreading love and winks to all the boy-band crazed teen girls on Thursday February 27 at 7pm on the Confederation Centre of the Arts main stage. An hour beforehand, at 6:00pm in Memorial Hall, Wave will give a recep- tion where all ticket holders can mingle with the duo. I had a chance to talk with Dave Thompson (the blonde one) about the band and their past and future, and their likes and dislikes. Was he flirting with me during this interview? You be the judge. Mariéve: Will this be your first trip to PEI? Dave: Yep. We've never been there before. M: Why now? D: We're playing a lot of dates in the Maritimes anyway. Seems like a good opportunity. M: What genre of music will you guys be playing ten years from now? D: Ten years from now? I'll be in an 80's heavy metal cover band. M: With the big mop of teased hair, right? D: Nope. Mullet. M: Ah, of course. Now, you guys have just put out a second album, following very closely after the first. What inspired such a quick follow-up? D: Well, if you think about it, we recorded the first one in the summer of 2000, it was released in 2001, then we went on tours and made videos and while all that was going on we were starting to write new songs, which were recorded in 2002. So that's really how it all looks from our point of view. OF es M: Inthe song gl "Don't Say z Sarah," who's Sarah? D: She's not a real person. I've never dated anyone named Sarah, neither has Paul. It's just a name that fit. There's a song that I like by Hall and Oates about a girl named Sarah. Maybe that's why. M: I read in one of your many fan-made web sites that you were born on Dec. 20, 1972. How do you keep your youthful looks at the age of 30? D: I sit in a freezer on a block of ice. No, they just mixed up the date. I was born in 1979. I'm twenty-three. M: Good to know. D: How old are you? M: Um...20... D: Really... M:Yeah... anyway, I had read somewhere that the both of you have girlfriends- D: Nope. M: No? D: Not anymore, you must have read some old stuff on us. M: Oops, my mistake. Mind if I ask what happened? D: Well, last summer I had a girlfriend, and then (Paul and I) went to California to do some recording for a month and a half, and when I came back I didn't have a girl- friend anymore. That's basically what hap- pened. M: Oh my, I'm sorry. Heh, well my next question was what did you do for Valentine's Day? D: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. M: I'll change the subject: Who was your favourite Ninja Turtle? D: Oh man. Um, the cowabunga dude with the pizza... Talkin’ with Dave From Wave Michaelangelo, right? M: Yeah, that was Michaelangelo. Pepsi or Coke? D: Coke, yeah Coke. M: Coors, Budweiser, or Alexander Keiths? D: Alexander Keiths. Is this for a campus paper? M: Yes, it is. D: So you're a student? M: Um, yeah, second year. D: What are you taking? M: Arts. English major. Hey, did yen ever go to University? ‘NO Jib: D: Yeah, for two years. I took Fine Arts. I didn't really do anything. When we were signed a contract with Warner, that was it for me. I was a waiter then, too, and when they signed us I quit that day and never went back. All I really wanted to do any- way was play music. M: Did you know that your band's name is the same as our campus pub's? D: Really? We'll have to go there after the show. M: How did you guys come up with the name ‘Wave'? D: When we were sending in our demo we had to pick a name for ourselves. So we just pulled one out of the air and said “Wave' and stuck with it ever since. That's the story. M: Well, that's the end of my questions. Do you have anything else you'd like to add? D: Um, is it true you guys have a lot of potatoes? M: PEI is 1/4 golf course, 1/4 beach, 1/4 rural area, and 1/4 potato field. D: You guys have golf courses??? M: Loads of them. Really nice ones too. You a golfer? D: Am La golfer? Am I ever a golfer! Hey, Road to Avonlea was filmed there, right? M: No, that was filmed in Ontario mostly, but it was based on writing by an Island author, L.M. Montgomery. D: So...you coming to the show? Want ® BURGERS & SMALL FRIES & CHEESE BURGERS 2 MOZZA POUTINES
