THE CAR FERRY 'ESTIMATES.
On Monday last in the Housc of
Commons Mr. Pardee the chief Oppo-_
sition Whip made some inquiries in
regard to the P. E. Island Car Fer-
ry. First he wanted to learn wheth-
er on the 23rd of last December the
Prime Minister had sent a telegram
to Mr. McLean, M.P., announcing the
Government's decision to establish a
Car Ferry service between Prince Ed-
ward Island and the mainland. Mr.
Pardee also wanted to know whether
at the time of sending the telegram

Minister of Railways and Canals.
This estimate was placed before the
Prime Minister before the said tele-
gram was sent.” Mr. Borden further
stated that the information as to the
estimated cost of the service would
be given in committee of supply when
thc estimate for the service would be
under. consideration. In reply to Mr.
Emmerson the Prime Minister said
that the great inconvenience of the
present system had been brought to
his attention in Parliament and also
during his visit to the Island, upon
both of which occasions he had
strongly advocated an improved ser-
vice.
RURAL POST OFFICE BOXES.
It will be remembered that in' 1908
the late Liberal Government and
their followers rejected the proposal
to establish mail boxes along the
rural mail routes, but later changed
their minds and adopted what had
before been the declared policy of the
Conservative Opposition. The House
was dissolved on September 17, and
it was in August previous that the
decision was reached to establish ru-
ral delivery. I-la-ste was necessary to
get the movement going. and it now
transpires that on August I4, I908_
an order was given to an American
firm to supply the boxes at $3' per
box;
There was no need, except n, politi-
cal one for this haste, and the boxes
should have been made in Canada.
But they were ordered in thc States
and without tenders being called for.
And many more were ordered and de-
livered to the Government than have
yet been used. According to a state-
ment issued by the present Postmast-
er Gencral a few days ago in Parlia
ment, 18,844 of the boxes have been
placed winis 90,333 boxes _src not in
use. their cost being $270,999, Of
,this amount, however, $150,000 is
.yet unpaid and may not be until the
boxes are Placed in use. In the mean-
