Trilnlaie, an employe of nlarge cor-
poration, is harassed by creditors and
in a mad effort to make botll ends
meet. he‘ resorts to _'theft of money
from his firm. Confronted by the inl-
minence of arrest and conviction? he
deserts his wife and aged mother to
become a hermit on a lonely -island
in the Ohio river. To create the im-
pression that he is dend, ho dons the
clothing of a drowned man whose
body he has found in the river, and
places his own on the body-. This done
to his satisfaction, he drops out of
sight. V
W_lth the Ending of the body. it is
surmised that Trimble was murdered
and the' police begin a search for his
slayer. Trimble has assumed the name
of Martin _and by a strange perversity
of_fate he is suspected of being his
own murderer. He eludos arrest af-
ter a ileree battle with the police and
goes to San Eranoisco where he be-
comes a stevedore. Remorse iliis him
when he thinks of llia mother and he
returns to her. She fails to recognize
him as her sou, but when she does
so finally” she -falnts. Trimble runs
for a physician into the arms of the
police aud,Mrs. Trimble dies.
Arrested as Martin, Thimble reveals
his identity,_and roger tba, police ‘r
his mother for proofs .of hisetatement,
he being unaware of her death. Trim-
ble is tried, convicted of murder and
sentenced to death. A Meanwhile, -his
former wilea-who _had remarried uu-
der the impression that she was a
widow, is appealed to in his behalf,

when he recognizes hor. and realises
that she is _happy in her new-found
