A gener- ous kind-hearted fellow, always on the alert to give information to the stranger. We soon found ourselves at Springfield, wnder the hospitable roof of Thos Haslam, Esq., from whom we received every kindness dur- ing our eive there, In the days of the} stage coach, Springfield was well known to the traveller but owing to the Railway passing about two miles to the north, it is now off the line of general travel. A more picturesque, cosy, charming, rural place is hard to find. The farmers here a: wealthy and everything indicates it. The more than comfortable residences, the spacious barns, the well cultivated fields, meet the ey ° wherever it resis. Nowhere in America is there sich refresh- ing scenery. The deep green of the foliage that clothe the primeval forests, and the rich verdure, spread over hill eae dale remind you of Longfellow’s words : ‘*If thou wouldst read a eit that will keep ; Thy heart from fainting, and thy soul from ' sleep | Go to the woods and hills:—No tears Dim the sweet look that nature wears.” | It was with regret that we bade our kind friends of Springfield adieu; but we shail not forget to pay it, a visit on Dominion Day, when the fairer daughters of that fair locality intend holding their ,church tea Mr. Editor, I want to, be there ar. Yours truly, ef A Visrror, Ch’town, June 19, 1883, The Dukes Tragedy. Uniontown, Pa, June 14.—The people of Uniontown, a rather lively town on the ‘river contiguous to Pittsburg, have been iu a high state of exitement ever since Dukes ‘(then a member of the State Legislature) | killed Capt. Nutt, who was Treasurer of ithe State, and the ‘excitement was increased and multiplied tea-fold by Dukes’ acquittal i a charge of manslaughter. The people | Were highly incensed at this miscarriage of justice, and the jury as well as Dukes be- oe objects of publicopprobrium. Dukes | was advised to leave town, and take himself out of sight of the enraged people, but he wag foolhardy enough to brave it out.” In his own words, he ‘‘would stay in Union- town or its cemetery.” James Nutt, son of Capt. Nutt, having met Dukes on the street. the latter langhed at him. This so enraged young Nutt that he went home and told his mother he conld stand it no longer. Arming himself with a revolver, therefore, he went out to meet Dukes, and the story of the shooting is substantially 98 follows:—“.fames Nutt was standing at what is known as the round corner on Main street a few steps down from the post office. Dukes was coming toward the oftice, and as Nutt canght sight of him he} }immediately whipped out his revolver. The {motion was perceived by Dukes, who, as Nuit pulled the trigger, dodged and ran} | for the office door. Nutt fellowed, aid | j Bred rapidly, two shots taking effect, and | Dukes staggered and fell. His pursuer| fired two more shots, one entering tle body as it lay on the ground and one _ pass-| mg close to the head of a young lady in t! post office. Nutt was almost immediately arrested and conveyed to jail.” . The} revolver found in his possession is the one carried by his father on the morning he was killed by Dakes. Dukes’ body was removed to the Jennings house, and in the same room where a similar service was per- | formed on the body of Captain Nutt, was| viewed by the coroner's jury, who rendered a verdict that Dukes came to his death from wounds received from a revolver fired by| Nutt. Great sympathy is felt for young | Nutt. he | oe a satiny | The Guiteau Gaeee Certain Washington quidnuncs have been making statistics to show that Cuiteau’s celebrated curse directed against those who were instrumental in hanging him has been measurably realized.
