pocal and Other items, - —————s GF Very Goon — The remarks of the Princess ra PATNCRe mn Tuk steamer V 1. Sivry arrived from Halitax this forenoon, with a large cargo of general merchandize. She is now loading at Peake’s No. 2 W har, and will sail, on return, to-morrow evening at 5 o'clock. Tar storm drum was hoisted yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, weather clear, wind light from the south. The wind gradually increased te a gale during lait night, and still continues, accompanied to-day with rain. Crrizens complain—-not without cause —that the ‘‘weigh tickets” given by the Market Clerk are not on printed forms, and may be easily forged or altered without detection. Would it not be well for the Market Commit- tee to have the citizens ‘‘protected” from sharpers and rogues ? Tue P. E. Island Farmer has been amal- gamated with the Summerside Progress— the proprietor of the latter being the pur- chaser. This is an exceedingly good move. it would be well if some such amalgama- tion could be effected in Charlottetown. We have too many papers. Sreamsnie Prince Edward, Capt. Robert Fraser, with cargo of 7,252 bush. oats, of 34 Ibs., and 360 pieces deals containing 10,800 feet superficial measurement and 3 boxes returned goods, shipped by Peake Bros. & Co., cleared for Queenstown for orders on the 2nd inst. A youne fellow named Story perpetrated a most daring robbery at the St. Lawrence Hotel a few days ago. He walked off the street into a room on the third flat, stole therefrom a valuable pipe belonging to one of the boarders, and escaped without appre- hension. He will be dealt with as the law directs in a short time. Ar the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court, this forenoon, Daniel Fraser, drunk and driving diserderly through the streets, was fined 83 and costs or 14 days; Colin Chis- holm, drunk and incapable, was fined the same; John Bolger, selling liquor without license, was fined $32 and costs. The as- s\ult cas2 of Mrs. Connolly vs. Michael Mc- Carthy was again postponed. ConxsipreRinG the disagreeable weather, the market to-day was well attended, Prices as follows :-—Beef, small, from 5 to 12 cts.; do quarter from 3 to 7 ets.; mutton, from 4 to 8 cts.; lamb, from 4 to 8 cts.; geese, each, from 35 to 50 cts; ducks, from 20 to 30 cts.; chickens, per pair, from 30 to 45 cts.; butter, fresh, from 20 to 23 cts.; do tub, from 15 to 16 cts.; potatoes, 30 to 35 cents; hay, foom 45 to 50 cents; oats, 28 cents; pork (carcass), from 3 to 4 cents, AnorHer illicit liquor vendor came to grief at the Stipendiary Magistrate’s Court this forenoon. Frereser’s new lecture is entitled “‘ Dead Shots at Living Follies.” The subject is a good one, and as it is to be given in the Athenzeum on Thursday even- ing next, at 8 o’clock, we ask for the lec- turer a full house. The admission fee, so as to bring it within the reach of all, is placed as low as five cents. This lecture was delivered for the first time at the open- ing of a-church in Lot 16, on the 21st ult. The Summerside Jowrnal says of it : ‘‘ The lecture on ‘ Dead Shots at Living Follies’ was an entirely new one, delivered for the first time, and one which we can safely say fully sustains the high reputation already acquired by Mr. Fletcher as a public lec- turer. It was listened to by a most appre- ciative audience, whose frequent and long- continued applause indicated that another ‘ dead shot’ had been successfully fired and another ‘ living folly’ thoroughly exposed ; while the merry, ringing peals of laughter significantly told that, seeking to impart sound instruction, the lecturer had not for- gotten to convey it in the most interesting and amusing manner.” WaLks AROUND JERUSALEM. —In our ad- yertising columns will be found a notice of a lecture by Dr. Lachlin Taylor, on sacred sites and scenes in and around the Holy City. It will be delivered to-morrow even- ing, Wednesday, the 4th, in the spacious Lecture Room of the Methodist Church. Even in these days of extensive travel, of picnics at the pyramids, and of holiday ex- eursion around the globe, Dr. Taylor ranks as a veteran traveller. We have heard him on the Nile, the Levant, the North-West and other subjects of interest. The Holy Land, and especially Jerusalem, with its various points—Gethsamene, Olivet and Bethany—consecrated by memories of the Redeemer’s ministry, are subjects on which the lecturer may be heard to most decided advantage. Thoroughly saturated with the theme, abounding in incidents and remenis- cences of travel and of observation, having a} command asryle which, from the familiar and colloqual rises to the loftiest strain of eloquence, Dr. Taylor has also the accom- plishments and intuition of a biblical scholar, and gives just the kind of informa- tion that intelligent inquirers desire. It was scarcely an extravagant compliment paid to him on one of these occasions, by the editor of the St. John ‘‘ Telegraph” that, for average students, the lecture con- tained more information than might have been gleaned from the perusal of a hundred | volumes.
