Graham announced in the house today that the government had iniide ii contract for the construction ol the super-striicture of the propos- cd bridge across the St Lawrence river, near Quebec, with the St Lawrence Bridge company, orgnnized by the share-holders of the Dominion Bridge compnny, of Montreal and the Canadian Bridge company, of Wal- kcrville. The agreement calls for the erection of n railway bridge with two [our-foot sidewalks, to cost at the estimated quantities, $8,650,000. 'l`hei'e has been deposited with the gnverniiient as security for the` car- rying out of the work, $1,297,500, or I5 per cent. of the contract price. While the Contract has been made by the govt-rnziient with the St Liiwcr- encc coiiipiiiiy, Mr Graham said the parent coiiipzinies, the Dominion Iiridgc roiiipiiiiy and the Uanailiun Bridge coiiipnny had both giinranteeil that the terms of thc contract would be oliscrvecl. ln iiinking his iiiiiiouiicement, Mr, (iriihniii said the striiiglitciiing out of the difficulties surrounding this iindertnkiiig hiis been it work fraught with much anxiety and not ii little iiifliistry. The undertaking was such 5 vast one thiit the engineers eiigngcd on thc hoard fully realized that every step should be made onlY after the fullest investigation. Dil- ference of opinion arose between these able men, which were alto- gether of technical nature and could only be understood by men with a theoretic and practical knowledge of bridge building. _ "The original intention, and in fact the scheme contemplated until veryrecently, provided for roadways and street railway traffic as well as steam railway tracks. The majority of the board, after full consideration recommended the acceptance of the tender of the St Lawrence Bridge company upon a design of their own which included provision for street railways and driveways. In doing so they called attention to the fact that another design had been sub- mitted by the same company for a purely railway bridge. 'By the adop- tion of the latter proposition it was pointed out a very considerable sav- ing could be niade. The government fully considered this suggestion and as a result the contract has been signed for a ruilwiiy bridge which will also have two four loot side- walks. ov. _.,.___,____,_._._._._- _._._._._._-_._._-_-_-_-_-___~_x,-,-,-_-,-_-_-_~_-_-.- OBITFARY. -_TI-IE BIG LINER IS _ \\‘i|li the diiwn of April lst the pure spirit ol Mrs. Patrick ligzin of Hiiiiipton ivingcil its way to iiieet its :ill-iiiercilul Judge, lifter ei well-spentl liie of scveiity-tivo years. The men who were asked for their opinions are H. K. Devereaux, John E. Madrdcn, Dr. John McCoy, Murray Howe. Aiidicw Leonard, Joe Markey and Henry Ten Eyck White.
