The subject was: Resolved that country life is better than city life. On account of the monthly tests occupying the first of the wee-k the appointed speakers had no speeches ready. Fora time it looked as if the debate would have to be postponed, but on account of,and i.n compliance with the Moderators expresesd wishes, several speakers were induced to give their opinions on each side. Conspicuous' among those- were S. Mahoney for the city, and P. Nellignn for the country. Mi' Mahoney brought out many good points such as_ the advantage in education Mr. Nelligan opposed this by saying, that it was easy to get a good founda tion in our rural schools, and that a finishing education could be had' in St. Dunston's. which was a country college in so far as it was outside the city limits. Again Mr. Mahoney said that there were greater opportunities to péome rich in the city. To this Mr. Ne ligan replied that duxlnglithe last few years on Prince,',Ed,ward Island' the men who became rich in this \vorld's goods. were born and rearedi on a. farm, and that it was while they were residents of the country that they had hecome_possess.ed of those goods. After a few more remarks by different members of the society, a standing vote was taken, and upon being counted' by the Secretary it was found to stand twenty-five to fourteen In favor ot' the country. Upon motion thc debate adjourned.
