GATHTERING UP THE -REI-ns or BATTLE General Foch Consolidating Newly Won Posi- tions ‘alid Strengthening the Lengthened Lines qf Cqmmllnieation. The Enemy Behind Vesle - River in no Position to Make or 'Resist Attack (Special to' The Guardian) Y LONDON, August 6.-The fbattle along the Vesle river between Rheims and Boissons was less violent yester day. Last night's statement from the French war otlice said that there had been only local lighting and that the general situation was unchanged. As Foch firmly maintains tbeinitiative. this slight slsckening in the struggle is not so'much attrlhutslble to any improvement in the situation of the enemy by reason of more favorable geographical conditions or any sud- den accession of good fortune, as to the Ifsct that the Allied armies must divert a little attention to .their lines of communication which have become somewhat attenuated during two weeks of rapid pursuit- of the foe. With the enemy behind the Vesle, Foch has -been enabled during the past forty or llfty hours to gather in the reins for a new phase of his coun- ter-offensive. ` Vast material damage' has been done to the enemy. ln addition there has been great destruction oi the enemy’s war material and trans» port facilitles.~ The despatches aiso_ show that the Crown Prince has used! large forces'in his futile efforts to' retard the Allied advance. ln the Champagne forty divisions of 'i‘eutons‘ were engaged--snd','in the' Aisne-'Marne ' battle thus far forty-seven divisions have taken part. This proves that sed in efforts to dislodge French and American units which crossed from the south bank. The ofliclal statement from the war office today also reports a French advance to the Avro, north oi' Mbntdidler. Prisoners were taken by the French in the repulse of a German raid south east of Montdidier. ` FRENCH FIRMLY`HOLDlNG AGAINST COUNTER ATACKS WITH THE FRENCH ARMIES IN THE _ FIEUD, ‘ August 6.-French troops maintained their bridge heads across the Vesle River despite two strong German counter attacks. A mile on the edge of village of Braisne. on the Vesle, six miles north- west of Flames, was occupied by the French during the night. Tw-o bridges In that region were also seized. TIlle Germans are still holding out in Bralsne. Machine gun batteries have been installed in Bralsne and the enemy is making bit~ ter resistance there. Art/lllery of both nrmies is henvily shelling along the Avre, Vesle and Rivers. Further north I the French are solidly established' on the banks of the River A_vre north of Bracges and Neu_vllle Wood. - _ GERMAN GUNS ACTIVE f EAST OF AMIENS Foch was not -beating the air but the utmost of enemy strength The German artillery tire is re-_ ported _to be heavy all along the Vesle river and local' efforts ot the Allies to extend their gains across the river have been fiercely resisted. What-V' ever momentary success the foe may possibly win on the north bank of the river for s-short distance east and west oi Flames cannot possibly 'bal- ance the importance of the steady pro__ gress ol’ Foch’s flanking movements immediately west of Rheims, and east of Soissons along the Aisne and Vesle. _ GERMAN -REPORTS STILL EVA8- IVE I Yesterday’s German oiliclal reports spoke of lighting south of Conds at the junction of the two rivers, about eight miles east of Soissons, while .1 despatch from Reuters correspondent with the French army stated that French patrols had succeeded in cros- sing the Vesle at several points be- tween Sormoise and Flames. With uninterrupted progress on the enerny‘s flank any effort of the Crown Prince between Fismes and Rheims to galil time for his retreating troops will be ‘Poorly spent. Valuable positions were abandoned by the toe in the region north of Mont- didier along the Avre river. The French forces now hold the entire line of wooded hills overlooking the river valley from Bra-ches to Meanil St. George’s, a distance oi about ts; miles.. Fighting is reported in the Village _of Hnrgioourt, on the left bank il! the river." lt was announced in Berlin yester- day that. the -Germans carried -out their retirement along the Avro with- out interference; -The truth -is that- Foch's continual, pressure has meds! the enemy's ,position north of Sols- sons nncopstortlulis .ss it has in the 'Albert region too, opposite the British Armies. - ` - - _Ludendorif's`man~power has been se- 'vereiy redttftllll recently, and if for no other purpose than to shorten iii# line _he has.lought security in reluct- i_lnt retreat.
