Science Gaining.Mu.l'c. Knowledge To Offset Fisheries Problems OTTAWA. Dec. 8. 1050- De- velopment. of the great potcntlsl fishery resources of Canada to obtain their maximum use depends largely on the efforts of a comparatively small group of Canadian scientists. Geographical Journal. writing on "Science in Fisheries" Mr. Manchester. who is a member of the staff of the Federal Depart- ment of Fisheries, tells the story of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada from its early beginning American Import Regulations For Canada Aliendedl OTTAWA, Dec. 16 -It was sn- nounced previously that certain changes in the United States resu- lstions regarding the entry of Can- adian livestock into tint. country would be effective as from August 14. These changes were not im- plemented for that date, but be- - came effective as fmm December 10. The changes follow. Canadian came offered for entry to the United States need not be tested for Bruceilosis (Bang's dis- etse).1f they are accompanied by I certificate issued or endorsed by I veterinarian of the Canadian Gov- ernment showing they were offic- ially vaccinated as calves 6 to 8 months of age. in accordance with Canadian Government Regulations. within 22 months of their being of- fered for entry to the United seam. The certificate accompany- ing such vaccinated cattle must show the date of vaccination of each animal. The Government regulations cover only those cattle which have been vaccinated according to the requirements of the 1"edersl-Prov- inclal Brucellosls Control Program. and cattle which have been vaccin- ated under other conditions will not. be accepted for entry to the United States without being blood tested negative to Brucellosis, unless they are classed ss animals for which a blood test. is not required. such as csttle for immedlat slaughter steers. or spayed heifers. The 0 to 8 months age range for Vlccinatlon actually means that cslvcs may be clused as "official vscclnates" if vsccinswd st 6 months of age. and up to but not including 9 month! of age. Canadian poultry exported to the United States must be accompan- fed by A certificate of a Canadian Government. veterinarian showing that the poultry havs been inspect- ed on the premises of origin and are free of any evidence of com- municable disease or exposure thereto. Under certain conditions the United States authorities may authorize the importation from Canada without such certificate, of eggs for hatching, newly. hatched poultry. and poultry consigned for lmmedlstc slaughter. vclopcd in Prince Edward Island. The introduction of artificial driers for the East Coast cod-fish industry and the construction of a mechanic- ally refrigerated railway car for transportation frczen fish are signi- ficant achievements in the annals of the Board. The Boards scientists may he found tagging salmon in the head- waters of some British Columbia river or combing the waters of a northern lake or sea. They might. also be found. demonstrating prop- er icing technique aboard a Grand Banks fishing vessel. But. all are working towards a common goaim to increase the knowledge of the fish and aquatic organisms in Can- adian waters and to help the in- dustry make the fullest possible use of them. The deep-sea fisherman who stalks his living on what he can trap in his net trusts to the same luck as the angler who casts his fly in the mountain stream. But science is gaining more and more know- ledge to offset the element, of luck and reduce the odds against the comm ciul fishcrmsn. Although there are still many "unknowns" the picture is becoming clearer. Mr. Manchester states. V I1-ll ..t. .1. l zga&tmA-uwa9 4”" The November issue of the Black Fox Magazine carries I very pertinent article entitled. "Beware of the Dcg," by John R. Gormsn. D. V. M., M. s. This is the gist of it . . Fur ranches should cut a wary eye at man's best friend. the dog. Dogs are nice, but . . . A friendly puppy carrying dismnper can put a rancher out of business, or at least can cost him thousands of dollars in fur animal loss.-s. Dogs aren't the only distemper car- riers. But their use up guards and pets around the home and freedom to run help make it. easy for them to transmit the malady to fox and mink. It is very important, there- fore, thst the fur farmer recognise the systems of distemper in dogs in order that any infectcd dog be iso- lated and properly cared for and to insure against infection among his fur animals. Symptoms in Dogs -- Distemper is the most important infectious and contagious disease of dogs. it ls I common disease in all fur-fs.rm- lng areas of the world. Although it is primarily a disease of dogs less than two years of age. cases in older dogs are not uncommon. In typical cases, the affection. as we know it today. is characterised by an irregular fever, dullness, loss of appetite, and a discharge from the eyes and noise. This discharge is at first thin and watery, lam becom- ing thick like mucus; it then tends to dry in crusts around the eyes and nose. If the lungs and air passages beccme involved, the dog will cough and have difficulty breathing. in sortie cases. examination of the skin may show small red pustules; in others diarrhea may be noted. As in fox and mink. later in the dis- ease. the nervous form may sp- pear. A dog may show an almost continuous twitching of one leg, or the fcrehead or cars, or blinking of the eyes or chsmping of the jaw. Intermittent convulsions usually ap- pear and the dog may become par- alyzcd. x Death follows the appearance of these nervous symptoms in 50 per cent or more of the cases. Those that do recover are often left with permanent brain or nerve tissue damage. The symptoms msy not always be as severe as this how- ever, and instead. the 7pup may show only a slight eye discharge and may not be feeling up to par. Nevertheless, it is still capable of transmitting the virus to fox and mink. A few dogs that have ap- parently recovered from an attack of distemper may be carriers and potential spreaders of the virus for a short period of time. In the majority of cases the virus is transmitted by direct ccntact: of the distemper infected dog will the fur bearers. The infected secre- tions of the sick dog may be trans- mitted for short distances bhrougli Since it is probable that in many instances transmission is also of- fected through, or by way of con. taminated food or dishes. the dog should not be allowed in either the feed house or the yards. Handling . . . . The first thing to do is to get the suspect 1 dog out of the enclosure and away from the feed house and to consult ycur xeterlnarlan. If the veterinarian diagnoses the condition as distem- per, he should give the dog large inoculations of distemper antiserus with antibiotics and supportive tscatment. Treatment should not be delayed. A 24 hour delay may, menn the difference between life and death. If the dog did have distem- per and has had access to the an- imals. there is a chance that it has exposed a few mink or fax to the vinus. WII.iI'i this in mind. a good procedure to follow would be to closely check all of the mink or fox each day for beginning symp- tcs-ns. As In any communicable dis- ease. it Is far better to stop sn out. break in its early stages than try to hold down the losses later. i We know many mink who keep dogs within the guard fence for protection purposes. This is permissible if the dog is vaccin- ' I rinsu notes on tones Silver Fox and the air by coughing or sneezing. farmers - ”- '.-x.: A .-R025 -4-. OOIIIEOTEO WITII 53-.3-.. --.- . Mink Farming aisd and not sllowod to roam the neighborhood and expose itself to distemper sndycrr other diseases and carry them back to the fax or mink. For the period during the distemper vaccination and one month after the last. inncculation. the dog should be isolated from the fox and mink. In rare instances, the dog may show a severe reac- tion (distemper break) and could possibly transmit live virus to the fur bearer. Under no circumstances should a stray dog he allowed in the yards.
