Slunips By FRANCIS J. up.“ WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 — (AP) The industrial production of the United States, hit. hard by the" steel and coal strikes, has slump- ed about 1i 1-2 per cent in a sini- lc month to the lowest level since the spring of 1946, the Federal Reserve Board estimated today. Preliminary figures for October indicate a. 20-point sag in the Board's seasonally-adjusted index, which stood at 172 in September, The base, 100, represents the av- erage for the five pre-war years, 1935 to 1939. The index had recorded a mod- est two-point rise from August to September, but the coal and steel shutdowns cancelled that and set off a downward plunge. Although President Truman told a press conference Thursday that those two big strikes have not. re- sulted in a national emergency at this time, the Federal Reserve governors noted that stee. pro- duction was curtailed to nine per cent of capacity beginning Oct. 1, compared with 83 per cent in sep- tember, The soft coal strike has been nn 37 days, the steel strike 2s. Trumarfs hands-oft stand on the big strikes, with no prospect of immediate Federal interven- tion, left the task of settling them up to the diaputiints themselves, plus whatever help Federal med- iators can offer. The mediators faced tough sit- uations in both strikes. Federal concillator Cyrus Ching has tel-n talking fruitlessly for more than a week with officials of United States Steel and with officials of the striking C.I.O. Steelworkers Union, headed by president Philip Murray of the C.I.O. Ching met "big steers" officials again today -bui. not. Murray, Murray insists that the steel companies should accept in full a presidential fact-finding board's recommendations. Those @1111 for the industry to pay the entire cost; of a. pension-insurance plan for the workers. The industry says the employees ought to pay some, too. Murray is expected to be pretty well tied up next week presiding over the C.I.O.’s annual convention at Cleveland. Negotiations for settlement of the coal strike were at. a. stand- still. Littie Change Noted ln Egg and Poultry Prices ‘There has been very little change in the poultry and egg mariner. dur- ing the week. reports Mr. F. M. Nash. supervising poultry products inspector. Egg receipts are light for the season. Due to a 20 per cent increase in chick purchases the past spring. a. greater production was expected. Egg prices have been good and although feed prices are high. the feed-egg ratio is as fav- ourable as in 1948. therefore low 68s production is. in a. sense. un- accountable. The demand for eggs continues strong with receipts insufficient to meet demand. Operators of grading stations are now quoting producers for uiigrad- edeggsAL5B.AM-l8,AP34.B4'i. C 26.
