Her name is Dooley, and, with a recommendation from the Young Womeu’'s Christian Association, she had gone to work for Mrs. Jennie N. Southworth, of Seven Hill Avenue, on Thursday morning. That night a gold watch valued at $225, a chain worth $60, and $25 in money were missing, and so was Winnifred. She went to the Eastern Depot and spent $7 for a ticket home, and was entering the car when the officers caught her. She was taken to the station, where she admitted her guilt and gave up the property, and crying hysterically, was locked up in a cell. Another Strike. New York, Aug. 8. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Southport Ferry Officials. Srr,— In Mondays’ Patriot 1 notice an article from the pen of G. B. N. censuring the Southport Ferry Officials, I happened to cross the ferry the same day, and séeing the letter in question, asked an explanation of some of the boat hands, and they gave the same reason as stated by Mr. N. inghis letter : That a young man drove hastily down to the steamer on her arrival at Southport, and told them his mother had taken ill and that he was going for a doctor. Mr. Bovyer, of course, a8 was the custom, and always has been so far as I can learn or- dered that the voat should cross over at once, and of course Mr, N. was ‘left, which under ordinary circumstances would cer- tainly be sufficient cause to call for his letter of protest. I have frequently been left in the same way myself ; but when I came tu know the reason always tried to exercise humanity to say it was all right. For a number of years past my business has taken me over the ferry on an average about twice a week, and I can conscien- tiously say I never saw an insult or even discourtesy offered to any who had occasion to eross ; and it has frequentiy come to my mind that the Government oF Govern- ment contractors were fortunate in their selection of men to manage their affairs, not only now, but for many years past. I am_ not now speaking from a political standpoint, or attempting to de- fend the accommodation we bave, which is certainly not up to my ideal; but so far as the officials are concerned, | believe I am safe in saying that no better men can be found than are now there under Govern- ment employ. If they have exceeded their duty at any time, it has been in the public favor, and against themselves, as they have frequently done before, and after hours, when actual necessity required it; and | have seen them even back the boat up after leeving the wharf, when there was no rus of business, to accommodate passengers whe happened to be a few seconds behind time. I really think correspondents should be 4 little cautious before giving breath to state- ments, true no doubt, but calculated to prejudice those unacquainted with the facts, and tending to discourage officials who have always striven to do their best to accommodate an already ong public. A few days ago Queen Victoria left Osborne House for a drive to witness the yacht squad- ron parade at Cowes. Her carriage had to cross a steam ferry on a pontoon, A too sud- den letting down of the platform on which the carriage stood caused an inrush of water, which partia!ly submerged the pontoon. The Queen and the spectators were for a moment panic-stricken, but the pontoon soon righted and floated free. The Queen was conveyed safely to her destination.
