The above races are to be known as the “Hotel Victoria Ice Races" and will likely be pulled on one week from to-day. ' On behalf of the assembled gather- ing Captain D. A. MacKinnon of the dered to Mr. Stems the heartfelt thanks of all for the handsome purses he had offered. He reminded those present of the high place Mr Sterns held in the estimation of horsemen throughout Canada because of the clean, straight and manly manner which had always character- and a pleasure to have him once more connected with the one factor single item, viz., the horse. A vote of thanks to Mr. Sterns was passed unanimously, followed by three ringing cheers and a tiger to which he repl ed in a very fitting manner. Mr. Sterns spoke strongly of the necessity of a new track in Charlottetown and managed by men whose hand and heart were with the horses and who valued the giving of a good race meet above dividend re- ui - on purses and the fact that although ex- penses had increased in the way of railway fares, etc., which nad dou- bled during the past few jears, yet-' the purses were even smaller than years past, which surely goes to show that the efforts of the horse-0 men to secure the best horses ob- tainable from the United States and elsewhere is at least not appreciated i n new trick and offering larger purses the very best horses could~bs-brought here and the spectators could witness races equal to any in the Provinces He also referred to several instances where horsemen were not used right andcmphasized the "Kremnut" case which was the cause of him deciding to withdraw his patronage forever from the race track owned by the Charlottetown Driving Park and Ex- hibition Association. He claimed fur- ther that judges at times were plac- ed on the stand who were not quali- iled for their position and' spoke of the insulting manner used by some starters towards competitors and fur- ther claimed that the attendance to their exhib tions would be slim if it were not for the efforts of horsemen. P. S. Brown, the Proprietor of the Revere Hotel, made an announcement which sent a new -thrill throughou- th`e__ assemblage. Mr. Brown said that he too had been watching with great interest the efforts made to popularlze ice_ racing and that he was ready to give $100.00 for a2.24 trot under the same conditions as specided by Mr. Stems to be known as the “Revere Hoteli Ice Racing Purse." _, Mr. Brown shared the honors with Mr. Sterns, coming in lor a large and hearty vote of thanks 'ended by lusty cheers. The Revere Hotel Purse will be raced for on a separate date, probably a week_later than the other two races, and in the meantime it- is not unlikely the above example will appeal to others and the win- ter’s sport will be carried on to an extent greater than ever before. 'It is hardly' necessary to remind those having an eligible horse to "get ready” and do the “other fel- lows" part in making the above races a grand success.
