I nv FORBES RHUDE flanutlian Press Business Editor Tliis is about four attractive girls who are second-year students 'i'ortinlo. This coming summer they wish to get outdoor geological expe- rtg-iicc, but mining companies set-in scared of them. In other words. they are having difficulty in lining up jobs. he girls are Jean Castleden nL Sutlhury, Ont., and Ruth Hoth- eitlngton, Rhoda Fesenko and Jane Graydon of Toronto. They took their problem to Mrs. Viola MacMlllan. because Mrs. lllttchllllan went prospecting as a girl and now heads several mines She told them: "You have to be ready to meet a bear!" She expanded. this by adding: ”t'ou have to carry your own land: don't expect favors just be- cause you are girls: and if called upon to do a lob a mile across some wilds and there is a bear in the way, well you must still izcl there." THEY CAN COOK. TOO! So, hearing about this. I asked the girls if they were ready to meet a bear? They didn't go into llt'r0l('s about it. but they seemed better prepared for it than most people. For one thing. all have had out- door experience. Miss Castleden has done "lots of camping. mostly with Girl Guldes:" Miss Hethrlng- ton "skis all the time;" Miss in gctilogy at the University of Graydon likes canocing and Miss Fesenko favors canoelng, swim- mlng and hiking. All were empha- tic that they "can cook." As to the specific problem of a bear. here are their comments: Miss I-lcthrington: "My reac- tion would be instantaneous but I don't know what it would be." Miss Fesenko: "It would be a matter of who could climb the ' fastest." l Miss Graydon: "I wish I had a .nickel for every bear I have met lln Algonquin Park" Miss Castelden: "I'll wait and see." These seemed fair enough an- swers asl even Mrs. MacMlllan had indicated that the best thing to do was to give the bear a chance to go his own way. WHAT EMPLOYERS SAY Asked what sort of replies they get when they apply for jobs. the girls summed it up as follows: ii;-,,.,.,, ,. . get a 'blg ldck' out of our appli- have been referred back to the same person several times. We get lots of letters but most of them are polite 'nos.' " They indicated they realize they pose a problem that it would mean separate facilities which probably only big companies could afford. Perhaps a compromise might be reached in jobs near enough to towns that they could get back at night. Barring such complexities. they were sure they could "carry their own load without favors" pad do Girl Geologists Find Jobs Are Not Easy To Come By ihe work. ALL ARE KEEN Asked why they had chosen ge- ology. here are their replies: Miss Castleden: "I wanted a scl- ence course and after talking to people at home in Sudbury. I de- cided on geology." t Miss Graydon: ''It is a booming "0 field with room for everybody." Miss Fesenko: "At llrst l was taking only an hour a week in geology as part of my science course. but I became so interested I wanted to know more. goes on under the surface of the earth fascinates me." WOULD BE PROSPECTORS As to. this summer. they all l agreed: "If no one takes us on we'll get prospecting permlts.'pack up and go out on our own." As one who interviewed the girls ltd like to say to mining or other companies which employ , geologists: "It girls are a problem you may as well start to learn to live with it because. sure as shooting. you can expect more and more girls to come after you. "And. whether or not they spend their lives at geology. their house- holds and communities will be bet- ter informed and more intelllielll places because of them." The only criticism offered by the Minister was the price of poultry and eggs. He said housewives dc- tlended upon the egg money to buy groceries and at ill and 20. cents a dozen she couldn't buy a great deal.
