cities of St. John and Halifax, else thore
would be war and carnage between them-
lt as all om feud, but has somrml!
grown more bitter with age. It has. found
fvent for years in sneers and tannts, in
gross perversions of fact, in exasD¢\`°liDZ
caricatures and in wordy WTRDSIBS in we
newspapers. St. John has been taunted
with its fog, a thousand times, which it
cannot help, and Halifax has been sneered
at and its harbor slandered as a skating
rink, because occasionally it freezes over.
But Haligouians have no more control
over the temperature than the St. John-
lners have over the humidity of the atmos-
phere.
Just now the Halifax Chronicle, Mr. 1
Fielding`s home organ, rises to fling a new
epithet at St John, in a if ading editorial
article headed “Maritime Hogtown." The
occasion for this opprobrium is that some
sieamers of the Allen Line subsidized by
the federal Government to ply between a
Br`tish port and St. John are to be with-
drawn and will hereafter make Halifax
t heir western terminal port instead. Ag-
ainst their withdrawal St. John protests.
Behind this lies the fact that the C. P. R.
steamers are now plying bo St. John,
steamer-s not owned by that railway com-
pany when the contract with the Allans
was made, and it is claimed there are not
berths enough at St. John' to accommo-
date these steamers and all of the sub-
sirilsei lines. We need not enter into the
merits of the Steamship controversy, with
which our readers have no cor cern. They
may be however somewhat - concerned
with other features of the case.

St. John has shown a disposition to

four feet in the public trough it ought
not to squeal unn_leiodiousiy.” We think
it will be concededkthat these are neither
thinking persons will see the unwisdom cf
wantonly insulting an entire ` community
in this fashion. St. John had enough
Liberals on its electoral list at the last
election to give Mr. Blair, then a col-p
league of Sir ,fWilfrid Laurier and Mr.
Fieldin|z,a thousand madcrity over Mr.
Foster. It can hardly ,strengthen the
Governmentinterest in Bt. John, or the
Liberal cause in New Brunswick to' heap
wholesale opprobrium upon these former
friends and supporters. But the unwis-
dom of the Chronicle in :recent years has
been much in evidence.  E
Punch has a cartoon on the Alaskan
B_uu<m-y award entitled the “al-asks
Cracker." It represents Uncle Sam and
Miss Canada pulling a broken cracker, he
getting nearly the whole of it. Uncle
Sam says: “What’s the matter with this?"

There is a ditferauce of opinion among
the London newspapers as to whether

tween Britain and France the French
Shore question in Newfoundland will be
brought to a _ speedy settlement. The
Daily Telegraph thinks this question will
be the first oueto be brought by the two

Chronicle continues that the treaty makes

arise and not with present dimculties. It
is a hopeful symptom of the situation that
some influential French newspapers have..
expressed the hope that the French Shore
question may be arbitrated at The
Hague.
A curious situation has developed with
regard to the Boer prisoners in Ceylon, a_
oath of allegiance, and are still being
maintained in- acamp at the cost of the
British Government. General Delarey was _
some time ago sent to Ceylon to induce
