If the traditional odium theologicum has lnot wholly disappeared from the field of | conched in tl liscussion elsewhere, there is no of it in this document, which ia e language of the ¢x- ourtesy and animated by the true religious most yrit of christian charity. In the elevation of its sentiments and lignity of its tone the letter is among most admirable productions of one of the ablest of Popes. It is worthy of stuly as a literary effort and as a state paper. Of skill which dictated it s enough to say that in a long and earbest app al for the restoration of unity hetween the Church of England and the Caureh of Rome there is not a word which could offend the sensibilities of the sturdi- est English Protestant, not an expressicn which does not carry with it the convic tion that it was dictated by genuine kind- lineas and sincere esteem. And yet it is only as a literary produc- tion, or as an evidence of the bettered tone of religious discussion, that the letter has : It navy well remain as a pleas: ant memorv It will neither mark nor cause any change in the situation. Neith- er in England nor in any Engiish speak- g country is it possible to conceive of a body of Protestants of any degree what- ever accepting an invitation to return to submission to the Church of Rome. consummate any vaine The whole of English history since the aeparation forbids it. Lhere is not en event of national importance from the first dissolution of the monasteries to the last vote on the Irish land bill which has not widened the separation. All English his- tory would have to be reversed, to be re- written, to be written backwards, to make a restoration of unity possible. English history for the last three hundred and fifty veara has been chiefly a history of success, but suecess and defeat alike have helped to make England Protestant. The lesson is taught alike by the Tyburn gallows and the Oxford fagots, The candle which Latimer lighted has never been put out, The defeat of the Armada, the regicide ut Whitehall, the Protectorate and the Reston- ation, the union with Scotland and the re- bellion against James, in a word, every event that has taken place on British soil since the time of Henry VII!. has intensi- fied the feeling which makes Great Britain irrevocably and inexorably Pro- testant.—Harpers Weekly. THE ART OF BREATHING. From Harper’s Bazaar. times, to those alert for indications, that the art of breathing has become more and more a subject of attention. Oculista as well as physiologists go deeply in- to its study in a way hardly to be touched here. Physicians have cured aggravated cases of insomvia by long-drawn, regular breaths, fever-stricken patients have been quieted, stubborn forms of indigestion made to disappear. A tendency to consumpe tion may be entirely overcome, as eome authority has within the last few vears clearly demonstrated, by exercises in breathing. Seasickness, too, may be sur- mounted, and the victim of hypnotic influ- ence taught to withstand the force of any energy directed against him. Tiere is a famous p!.ysician of Munich, who has written an extensive work upon the subject of breathing. He has, besides, formulated a system by which asthmatic patients are made to walk without losing breath, while sufferers from weakness of the heart are cured. At Meran, in the Austrian Tyrol, his patients (almost every royal house of Europe is represented), are put through a certain system of breathing and walking. The mountain paths are all marked cff with stakes of different colors, each indieating the number of minutes in which a patient must walk the given distance, the breathing and walking being in time together. As the cure progresses the assents are made steeper and steeper. THE CAUSE OF INSANITY. In arecent article on brain and nerve exhaustion Dr. Wm. M. Baird, of New York, says: “It is within the memory of the present generation that insanity was thought not to be a disease, but an abnor- mal physical condition, a vicious temper or emot'on that needed only strong will to control. To-day we are quite safe in say- ing that insanity is, indeed, only another and in some respects more serious, form of nervous exhaustion. How important, then, that the nervous system should be kept in a state of health. The victims of nervous disease will find in Hawker’s nerve and stomach tonic, a remedy pecu- liarly adapted to his or her condition. It restores the nervous system to a state of heatth, by improving the digestion and enriching the blood, enabling it to rebuild the wasted tissues. Its effect is stimulat- ing and strengthening. It restores the lost energy, and health is fully regained. This great remedy is sold by all druggists and dealers at 50 cts. per bottle, or six bottles for $2.50, and is manufactured only by the Hawker Medicine Co., (Ltd.,) St. John, N. B., and New York City. —— ee Prince Francis of Teck, a brother-in- law of the Prince of Wales, lost £10,000 onthe Curragh races. The Manitoba school law was introduced by a Liberal Government, and adopted by a Liberal Legislature.
