Pickers- gill Monday night described Fi- nance Minister Fleminrg’-s budget speech as “the essence of Tory- ism—reg~ardin-g trade as a bad thing." The former Lilberal immigra- tion mi-nrister said in the Com- mon-Is -that the tariff changes an- nounced by Mr. Fleming show “a bacik-to-Bennett policy.” But R. B. Ben-nett, Conserva- tive prime minister from 1930 to 1935, had been boastful of his tar- iff tightening while the pres- ent Progressive CoIn-serviatives seemed almost ermlbarrassed. ' FURTIVE FLEMING “IIf Bennett was boastful I sup- pose the only thing one could say is that Fleming is fiurtive," Mr. Pickersgill said-. The finest example of this was Mr. Fleming’-s announcement of plans to revise dumping duties to base valuations of imports on cost of production plus an amount -to represent a reason- able profit. Exi-sting dumping duties apply only if an import enters Canada at a price below its going rate on its home market. “This is, of course, of all pro- tective devices the most insidious and the most dangerous," Mir. Pickersgill said. It had long been a favorite Conservative tariff wea.pon. , He sa-id he hesitates to say that Mr. Fleming's statement that the same policy existed up to 1948 was‘ "calculated to de- ceive,” but it might have had that effect. TAKEN IN BY TORIES During the Bennett government Ira, he once had paid more duty on -two a-u-tomzolbiile tires bought in the U.S. than the tires them- selves cost. Mr. Picker-sgill said it seems, unfortunately, that about once every generation Canadians ‘get “taken in by the Coniservatlves Ind have to learn again the les- >\§ I 2 FOR I SALE! The pattern followed by Con- servatives was usually the same: To “incite” a following by stir- ring up feeling against the U.S. the United Kingdom. “The pattern starts on the wholly falacious doctrine that it is a wicked thing to have a lot of trade with the U.S.” It never seemed to occur to a “real '1‘-ory” that a lot of trade is advantegous. Mr. Pickersgil-l said the tariff increase on British wool cloth Was “in many ways the most fantastic” aspect of the whole budget. E Prime Minister Diefenlbalker had given -the impression’ last year that he planned to divert a large amount of Canada‘: im- ports from the U.S. to the U.K. Then at the first opportunity he had put a tariff on the “classic” import from Britain. (CP)—A religious squabble has forced 1 Roman C-athol-ic group here to take back its offer to administer a proposed municipal hospital. The Yarmouth Diocesan Hos- pital Commission told town ‘coun- cil Tuesday it had decided to withdraw its offer “in view of circumstances” which Ma y or Robert Killa-m described as “a religious battle.’’ The decision avoided a showdown vote at a ratepayers meeting. ,.Comrn-ission secretary Ernest Cottreau said in an interview the prospective choice between the Sisters of St. Joseph or the mun- icipality as hospital administra- tor had become a pretty con- troversial matter." He said the question of who was going to run the hospital ‘had taken on a religious angle rather than a social angle" The commission’s move brought immediate cancellation of a proposed ratepayers’ meet- ing called by town council to vote on the matter. G0 AHEAID ALONE? Commission spokesmen said they may go ahead and build a hospital on their own. Mayor Killam said the Sisters of St. Joseph had originally agreed to administer the hos- pital. Later town council dis- cussed the possibility of munici- pal administnation and the ques- tion was to have been settled by Catholic Group Takes Back Offer To Operate Hospital the ratepayers. The mayor said that originally the hospital order was asked to come here. The sisters had agreed to build a hospital but later consented to serve as nurs- ing administrators of a public hospital built to serve five sur- rounding municipal units. Deputy Mayor Hubert Lynch, who made the original motion for t-he ratepayers’ vote, said Tuesday “the situation wasn't- very good . . . it wasn't doing the town any good” He said Protestant churches last Sunday held “hospital day services” and Roman Catholic Churches “were sending out bul- letins” Mr. Lynch said “a campaign” developed. ' - CALLED OFF MEETING M-ayor said a meeting Monday between the Y-armouth Hospital Commission and the Dio- cesan Commission “unanimously agreed that in the light of cur- rent religious feeling being fos- tered" the proposed ratepayers meeting should be called off. The future of the proposed new hospital is uncertain. Yarmouth now ha-s a 55 — bed hospital. The’ proposed regional hospital would have had 140 beds. Mr. Cottreau said council’: de- cision to call off the meeting “will probably stave off any un- fortunate happening” GHARLOTTETDWN Joint R. C. A. F. Association Meeting Held The Summerside R.C.A.F.
