(FsrIIanm.rd'e Glsette.) THE FIBEWOOD SLEIGH. In life there is many a treasure That mortals ere rose to display ; But few seem to diiat with much pleasure} On the honest Old Firewood Sleigh Ilow ehamsfulplt should be so nliglllflii And let! without honor or praise. When for strength and convemomce wanted 'Tie surely the monarch of SIPIIIIII. Oh, what are the painted and cushiun‘d U iisociuhle Cabs of the day, Compared with a jolly old fashion‘d Commodioue Firewood Sleigh. Oh; grant me a pony to rumble And a fair one to sit by my side, Then over the snow banks to gainbol, Wrepi in a wild Bufalo'e hide. nd Oh; for a moonlight excursion, With friends, on a bundle of hay, How lorioos the fun and diversion Of a rive on the Firewood Slei it But the breeaan of April are b owing, And the pleasures of winter decay ; The snow is all melting and going, Farewell to the Firewood Sleigh. MISCELLANEOUS. Tun Ice Caor.—lce-cutting operations in thin vicinit have been discontinued for the season. e result is stated to be, that not more than fro one-third to one-half II. crop has been housed, and that portion secured is generally of an inferior quality—lucking in thickness and solidity, and is consequently more perishable. Last year, the aggregate crop housed by the New- 'ork Ice om- gphnies somewhat exceeded 200,000 tone. 'I year, it will fall short of I00,000,which is the smallest for many years. The con- cern most largely engaged in the business, the Knickerbocker Ice Co., has secure this season, only about 26,000 tons against IIILMI) last year. There is a proportionate falling ad‘ in other places. Baltimore has failed altogether, and Philadelphia is little better. In Boston, where there is usually an abundant supply for all purposes, the crop is decidedly short. We understand that the prices of ice next summer will be nearly double what they were last, or at least one-third larger; for instance, a large msjoriy of families ordinarily receive ice at the rate of 25 cents r week; for the same quantity it is supposed about 37} cents will be charged, insomuch as, w i the supply is diminished, a largely increased demandisanticipated.—.N'¢w York Tribune. McGr.ssnIrt’s Parser Taairsruivriivo Arraasros.-The transplanting machine of Mr. McGlashen of Edinburgh, now well known to practical men in the east country, and for which he has received a first-class certificate of merit from the Caledonian Horticultural Society, was tested on the grounds of Mr. Campbell of Blythswood, in presence of a large part of ladies and gentlemen, and practical men. Mr. McGla- shen having everything in readiness to pro- ceed with the operation, a line laurel, the branches of which were twelve feet in diameter, ‘was raised with the ball of the earth, five feet seven inches square, and three feet deep, attached and placed on a truck for removal in less than a quarter of an hour. The laurel, with the soil adhering to the root, was calculated to be between four and live tons in weight. The raising of the shrub vertically from its bed was accom- plished with the greatest ease by the action o a screw turned by two men. The suc- cess of the operation was deemed highly satisthctory. and must have been very grati- fylilng to Mr. McGleshen, the inventor. e invention is applicable to all depart- ments of eni , an in its various forms can raise with the same facility the lIorist’s flower and the largest tree. R. 8. Tue Boonrsaairg Scaew.—Iu outline, the Boomerang screw resembles the curious in- strument afier which it is named, but its sweep is like that of a bird’s wing, though there is no taper towards the end, the breadth bei nearly uniform. The advan- tages clslnmitd for it are, a largly increased p power, and a freedom from any ropelling ‘ hoke"of water alter leavin the fun, while its weight is very much less I an that of pro- pellers of like power now in use. li_ese, pf course, are great desiderata, especiall in long voyages. To test the capabilities o the "Boomers ," the nova, an irou-nteam- er, has been fitted up by _Me_ssrs. James Taylor and Co., . Britannia iron wor s, Cathcart-street, Birkenhead. The Water Witch, another iron steamer, which has been le hened some 45 feet, by the same firm, an supplied with en inee of greater power, is also to propeIled on the same principle; but, iii this instance, an important improvement is introduced. The shaft and fan extend beyond the rudder, so that, if any accident should be it either to the screw or meehhiery, an can be readily detached ‘and hauled u n deck, in any- thing like moderate weat er, and the_ vessel can proceed on her voyage under sail. As an evidence of the estimate of Sir Thomas Mitchell's patent, the government has, we understand, ordered the construction of an iron steamer upon that principle by Messrs. James Taylor and Co.
