As soon as the men at the pit had recovered from the shock occasioned by the explosion, energetic steps were taken to organize a relief party, and a number of volunteers descended to the bottom, at the imminent hazard of their own lives. A sad spectacle met the explorers’ gaze at the bottom of the shatt, but ne time was lost in mere observation. Uwing to the prevalence of afterdamp their work was necessarily very slow, but they succeeded in discovering 16 bodies, which were conveyed to the top of the shaft.
