In its notice of the pamphlet written | bw Mr. W.C. Mr. Ferguson is eb- cdeavoring to secure, for the benefit « fthe public, debts justly due and owlvg to the public ‘and the Patriot assails him with | ypprobious words Patriotic truly!! When the Pat iol :eny man has been unduly ean show that en) pressed to pay his debts to the public, it will be time enough to attack the Hon. Donald Ferguson. The Halifax Herald relates the fol- lowing facts about the Londonderry Stee! | Company, as showing the bearing of the| protective tariff upon its affairs :—*‘ 1) While the National Policy did not ‘save | the company, it enabled them, though insolvent, to continue their operations | fer five years, without going further in debt. (2) During those five years the works of the company were greatly ex- tended, and their annual output of iron doubled. (3) On all previous octasions, when the company owning the works er llapsed, th e works collapsed with them, On the present occasion, so advantageous has it become to‘operate the mines that the prospect is that, notwithstanding the liquidation of the company, the works will be carried on with uvabated vigor.” —Very litttle more revenue has been drawn from the article of sugar under the present tariff than was drawn under the old tariff. The sugar revenue under the old tariff was: 10" Adi < PO eter ee eee «82,210,000 . 2,515,000 SE cattigeatle Rare Under the present tariff the figures are ; AEE. o wiedgncnbetdhdpiesehianea ae LBB Q.cecceccccopecsecescsonnsee 2,194,000 But a radical and most beneficial ehange has resulted from the adoption of the present tariff. Several large manufactures have been established here, the West India trade has been restored, and sugar is cheaper to our ecousumers than ever. —-**Laclede,” in the Montreal Gazette, cites a sublime passage on Phidias’ colossal statue of Jupiter Olympus :— “There exists a God, Creator, and Father of all beings, older than the heavens, greater than time, greater than eternity, greater than Nature itself, which dissolves and perishes ; a God that the voice cannot express, that the eyes cannot see, but still one that imperfect mau, a prisoner in the flesh, has need to imagive in sensible forms. Statues are the material symbols of the inaccessible divinity. The duty of the artist is to comprehend the Divine Nature, and to make it comprenensible to the consci- ousuess of his fellow men. With the Greeks it was the art of Phidias that awakened in their souls the souvenir and the thought of Deity.” ‘Professor Goldwin Smith, now living in ‘oronto, was Lord Coleridge’s ‘fag’ at Eton, but the Chief Justice did not go out of his way to meet him~-” —Commenting on this paragraph a correspondent of the Halifax Herald says:— ‘| am in a position to state, on the very best authority, that Lord Coleridge did meet Professer Goldwin Smith when in this country. The facts of the case are these: Lord Coleridge had contemplated visiting Canada, but while in the United States he received a number of threatening letters, warning him not to come. He, however, wished to see Professor Smith, and an arrangement was made to meet him at Niagaza, incognito. . This meeting did take place, and Lord Coleridge was accorpan- ied by three detectives. The incident may not be publicly known, but it proves that the chiet justice did ‘go out of his way’ to meet him. —Another reassuring fact in con- nection with the financial position of Cavada is that the balance due Care- dian banks from abroad, is nearly seven millions of dollars greater than it was a mouth ago. The Montreal Guzelte explains that the increase is in part due to shipments of grain and produce, but mainly to the arrangement between the Canadian Pacific Company and the Goverument, under which a deposit of uine millious was made by the company in the Bank of Moatreal in New York to ihe credit of the Government. This transaction crops, out, also, in the state- ment of the Dominion Government deposits, which are $4,710227 larger on the mouth. The supply of Exchange is HOW 50 ample that the danger of inability to provide bills for remittance by import- ers, may fairly be regarded as zemoved. —Sull another sphere is opened for the useful potato.
