The game started at 8.30 p. m. with Referee Clarke in charge. The first period opened with Emerald on the offensive with fast combination play. After five minutes of play Ford scored for Emerald on a pass from Murphy. The Freetown team seem- ed nonplussed at tho heady hockey which the Emerald iteam were play- ing and before many minutes had elapsed A. White scored on Fbrd’: rebound. Before the period ended M. While scored the third goal for Emerald on" a. nice individual rush. On the resumption of play Em- erald took things somewhat easier and were content with shooting from their opponents‘ blue line and breaking up Freetowns attempts to score by close backchecking. The feature of this period was the ,. ctacular poke checking of Fyfe and the sterling work of A1- len on the defence. During the third period Freetown made strenuous attempts to score and kept Emerald on the defensive. Freetown efforts were finally re- warded when C. Clow scored from close in after about eight minutes of play. From this stage on Freetown continued to press and had the best of the remaining play and but for stellar goal tending of Smith would have scored again. The final boll sounded withEm- erald victorious by three goals to one making the total for the series: Em- erald, four; Freetown, three. The cup was presented to Capt. NEWSY IIIBIIJOLA NDHE A NEW CONTEST My esteemed friend. Mr. Ludlow Jellkilll. 0f Marsllfield, writes to remind me that there are still some books available as prizes in a. children's contest such as was 9111-. ried out last year. Our Editor, ,1. W818 willing to encourage good VWYKS, has kindly given permission to make use of The Guardian as befflfi. and the stage is all set for a practical "Bird Box" competition, 41114118 spring and summer. Each competitor must put out at least three Bird Boxes, although he (or she) is not limited in that number. When a. bird-box is occu- pied, the contestant must secure the signature of his public school teacher certifying the occupation. This certificate is to be retained till the close of the competition, due notice of which will appear‘ in The Guardian. The contestant will also take observational notes. which together with the certificate, will form the basis for judgment. Such a. competition will have se- veral aspects. It will help to con- serve our bird life. now sadly de- pleted- our smaller birds are dis- appearing. if we compare tho old records with w-llai. we see now. The only birds that are increasing are the grsckles, starlings and "Eng- lish" sparrows, and just here I may say that these birds are not eligible for purposes or tho competition. Such e compctlon would interest the teacher as well as the scholar. A good teacher will encourage na- ture study, since nine out oi’ ton of llis or her scholars will spend their lives in the country. It is a nleri- iorlous work to help them to be en rapport with their environment. It teaches the scholar several dc.- sirable sentiments: kindness to the must commend "those ill authority over us" for putting the bounty on skunks. These animals are very destructive to the c885 and young of our ground-nesting birds. and one cannot begin to csifmate the damage caused by the enormous total of 5,500 skunks, now happily defunct. Here we have one cause of the scarcity of our smaller birds. The Horned Owl is also getting the attention it deserves. But a word of warning is in order here. If we shoot off the other owls (ex- cepting the Snowy Owls) we are killing birds of the greatest value io the farmer. Dr. Chas. W. Nash. one of the great authorities on bird life, states that (always ex- cepting the Great Horned Owl) he had never found a. trace of a game bird or domestic fowl in any o! the many stolnachs he had examined in the past fifty years. Dr. Fisher. of Washington, D. 0.. investigated the contents of several hundred owls’ stomachs and found that they consisted mainly of mice, rats and other small mammals, frogs, 11- zards, and insects. with here and there a trace 0f small birds, His considered opinion was that owls should he prolecled. Our young gunners. who arc out after the bounty, should make themselves acquainted with the distinctions, s0 as to avoid shooting the wrong owls. A NEWSY LETTER. We are assured on good author- ity that it is more satisfactory to lzavc a bouquet on ones desk than on OIIUS casket, and I was remind- cd of this when I opened a letter which read: “Dear Agricola, your Ncwsy notes are most interesting to me, especially your notes on lower forms of life. and in this case, appreciation of their forms, plumage and songs; and this ls g0- ing to be a pleasure as long as the] scholar lives. , Now a word about lllC Iloxl». lil you have never made a brd-box before, write The Commissioner, Canadian National Parks Branch.
