F Halifax Wanderers Win Track And Field Meet Ag crack six-man track squad of Halifax Wanderers, led by two young college students. captured top team honors and a seasoned Charlotte- town campaigner won the highest number of individual points in the Maritime Invitation Track and Field Meet at Memorial Field yes- terday afternoon. The Wanderers with .runners Bill Haley and Johnny Martin showing the way amassed an im- pressive total of 59 points. Second place honors were won by the Halifax Navy team with 38 points followed by the Abbles with 24 and the R.C.A.F.. Summerslde. with 14. George Waiters of Charlotte- town picked up two firsts and two seconds in the field events to score a total of 16 points. Walters aggregated one point more than the Wanderers Bill I-laley who had 15 points on three first placings. Although they picked up nearly half the Wanderers points, Haley and Martin were not the whole show in the Halifax team's win. Max Keeping, .1. Warner, Stewart MacMillan and Best all added points to further the Haligonians' cause. Working under a hot sun with a fair sized crowd of fans look- ing on the athletes from the four teams staged one of the finest track meets to be witnessed here o'clock. Approximately 55 athletes. in- cluding the best in Maritime Inter- collegiate circles and the Services took part in the competition. The Halifax Navy with about 25 men had the most entries. The Ab- bies and the R. C. A. F. each had a dozen men in the meet. The capable Bill Haley swept all honors in the dashes. Haley placed first in the 100, 220 and 440 yard events and in addition help- ed Wanderers pick up 10 points in the relay. A Saint Mary's College student Johnny Martln wrapped up the distance running honors for the Wanderers. Martin easily won the half mile and the mile runs. Stewart MacMlllan of the Wander- ers who plnced second in the mile later won the six mile road race. As expected George Walters and Wendall Barrett stood out for the Abbles. Walters won first placings in the Javelin and the hammer throws. George placed second in the discus throw and the 16 lb. shot putt. :20-year-old Wendali Barrett tool: the top honors in the running broad jump with a leap of 20 feet, nine inches.
