All the value of this information is last. The mode of dealing with the machinery is searcely more satisfactory. Some of it I eet in motion and avery small part of it Is But as a rule there is n the absence of set to work. competitive trial such trial the judges have to be guidec Now, it is utterly and in miinly by appearances. impossible to tell, from the appesrance of achine, how it will work, much less what results it will achieve in comparison with thece attained by a dozen other machine’, It is no doubt difficult to find the means of trying all the various machines or any one For instance, there i- ™m season of the year. nothing for the reaping machines to do at ’ But this is not an insuperable difficulty. The machines intended to be exhibited should be previously submitted t» 2 competitive test at the proper season In the sane way threshing and other ma ciines should be put into operation and judged by their achievements. Much valuable information which the judges could collect regarding the means of ob taining success in the various branches o! in lustry, of which specimens are exhibited, s ould be carefully preserved in the shape of reports, put into order by a secretary in this way the knowledge which is now -ontined to a few would become commor property. Tais reform ought to be mid next year. It is notice ’ that the best shows made et the Ar ual Provincial Fairs are made when tho exhibitions take place at the vreat centres. Local jealousy and loca! anbition have hitherto prevented the se. lection of one central p!ace in which to hold the annual exhibitions. There are some advantages in the perambulating «ystem, the chief of which is that person: who attend these exhibitions have the ep- vortunity of seeing several places. But the disadvantages are geeat and numer- ous. When a place near one Provinee is selected, it is only possible to draw exhibitors from one side, and the stance from the other is 60 great that saw will vndertake to} traverse it. The erst of the multiplication of buildings in volves a serious waste of capital; these puildings must mecessarily. 10 many CAse*. te inferior to what they woald be if per- minent structures were erected in some eentral place. Even at London, on Bad present oceasion, the senting eee to the carriages Was altogether inadequate. and the carriages were seen to great disad vantage, when it was possible to see them at all. The booths rented for the supply of refreshments are often far from wha they should be; and the public has pe reisonable guarantee that it will get tye" @hat it pays for. A permanent Pas exhibition would cure all this. It a ba ance of advantizes and disadvantages were struck, it would, we think, condemn the perambulating system. An application from Colchester Re- form Club, for information as to terms at which the Truro Presbyterian Seminary cou'd be rented or purchased, was referred to Committee. An application from Mr. James Fitz- Patrick, licentiate of the Presbyterian Church of the United States, to be recelv- as a minister of this Church, was referred to Committee. The complaint of Rev. John Murray, ot | Presbytery of Sydney, in refusing to place the Presbyterians of Victoria, ministers and Jaymen, under the care of the session of Falmouth Street Church, occupied the remaining part of the day. The complain- antin this case contends that these two stations can be effectually worked in con- nection with this congregation. The Pres< bytery, on the other hand, contend that they should be associated with some other localities, with the view of being ulti- mately formed into a eeparate charge, and inthe meantime supplied by the Home Mission Board. Last week one steamer alone brought 0’ Liverpool from’ Cariada 280 barrels of egg:, and there is every prospect of a. continuous stream of egg’ setting in from that country. The Canadians can- not, in fact, keep up with their hens, wio lay more eggs than the colony can _con- sume. The matket report of the Hamil~ ton (Ontario) Spectator of the 9th of August mentions that eggs were * yery quiet,’ there being really no- wholesale trade in them at present. In Ottawa fresh eggs were selling at 12 cents, that is six« pence, adozen. Eggs at that price would be a boon to the British housekeeper, and might take the place of meat,in which case there would be less grumbling and gout. —_———-—--@8 © <P> -s Oo” :* a — vniatle.
