claration: It will not have escgied the
attention cf the members of the confer-
ence ihiit our age is a. time of great
movement in which intellectual and
religious, moral and social inilueuces
are powerfully reacting upon each other.
The results are perhaps in many ways
disturbing. The old methods of work
. ai-.9 giving place to new. New ideas are
takiiit.; the place of the old ways of
Itliinking. There is a. development of
new phases, even of a religious char-
; iiczer. feeling and experience. Such
ch:-:npcs cannot take place without
grave anxiety on the part of men ol
corseriative spirit. Nor can they tpro-
ceed without at times undue rashness
on the parrot' the men whose nature
urges them to lead the advance. In the
,past history oz' the world rush more-
linei;t~ iirive in almos: every instance
‘sprung i oin trac universities. Especi-
ally has ihi.-i bceii the case whero they
have proftiinclly touched religious life.
The history of Oxfird and Cambridge
ihiis been the hi-tory of all the great
movements of England. if the World
is to move onward, suci changes must
mari its progress. And perhaps they
can begin in no safer place than in the
university. There. if anywhere; the
iwatchword and goal of all work is
truth. Buy the truth and si-ll it noi.
The safety of the Church and the world
lies in the truth. God is honored by the
truth. The kingdom of Christ is the
_ kingdom of truth. But it would be
foolish indeed for us to dream that we
have exhausted all truth- Tue church
that studies, that searches for: the very
truth, that keeps herself in touch with
all the wot1d’s progress in the discovery
of truth. whose stability of the limes
and strength of salvation lies in wisdom
and knowledge, will be the church oi
the future. Such _vi as the spirit of our
fathers in the ear ly days 6! this country,
and we truat..\.hat the same spirit will
ever abide with their children.
The foregoing declaration was regard

arraignment in his presidental address

as encouraging as we desire. is :fairly
satisfactory. The present endowment,

reported in 1894, as a sum of $6.000
which was then counted as a productive
