important Vocision of the Supremo Court. FOR THE TRADE REPUTABLE PUBLISHER STANDARD LITERATURE. The daily press, and indeed all who save the moral welfare of the commun ty at heart, have found frequent cause of complaint, in the course pursued by extensive publisners of so called ‘“popu- lar literature Pandering to the most| depraved tastes of ignorant readers, | some of these Concerns, keeping barely within the pale of the law, have flooded the country with sensational product ions devoid of literary merit, but which owing totheir highly spiced cbaraeter, | have met a demand that it should be the work of every honest publisher to discourage. Lengthy diatribes against their action have never been effective, but valuable service in the cause of pure and instructive reading has been performed by publishers who have placed standard literature, the works of the best authors of all nations, in cheap and attractive fo,m before the pubiic. Among them, Norman L. Munro, ot New York, occupies an honored posi- tion The success that has attended his re publication of these works in the world fumous “Munroe Library,” and Jater in pocket form, together with the unpre cedented results that have followed tlie publication of The New York Family Story Paper, turnishing lively, instruc tive and interesting reading for the home circle, and enjoying the largest cireulation ot any periodical of the kind in the world, cannot but be accepted a eriterion ef the value of the ser vices he has rendered the community, while no intelligent citizen, much less those who have benefited by his enter prise, will begrudge him the profitable results of hiswork. Few therefore will tind cause for complaint in the recent action of Judge Donohue, in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, in sustaining Mr. Munro in his claim to the trade mark, “Munro’s Pub- lishing House,” under which, in con- nevtion with his name, his publications have become so widely known. A title had been used by a brother of Mr. Munro, in the publishing business, but a permanent injunction was issued by the court, restraining him from its furure employment. As a pioneer in business of publish- ing cheap and entertaining literature of a standard and unobjectionable charac- ter, Norman L. Munro has fairly earned his pecuniary good fortune, while his liberal patronage of the arts, his promi- neace in social circles and the interest he has shown in the higher class of sports, as manifested by his recent con- struction and equipment of his superb steam yacht “Norma,” render him an excellent example of America’s true aristocracy, her successful men of business. ?°-=_- — Student Pranks in Berlin. PROTECTION WARK t THE LEADING OF POPULAR I as (ierman university students are priv- ileged beings, who may outrage pro-| priety and good manners to any extent | without arousing the wrath of either professors or public. Long betore | Bismarck entered into the ranks of the | students they might do things which other people might not. The chancellor has got to the top of the tree in spite of all the pranks in his student's life, and there istherefore some hope that the young Berlin student who the other day paraded about one of the most frequent- ed streets of Berlin in a lady’s white petticoat, a red-feather hat, with a sun- shade held gracefully aloft, may turn!) out something better than the leader of a shouting and applauding crowd, attracted to his strange attire. It ap- pears that the young man had made a | wager to walk from his residence to a) favorite students’ haunt in the centre | of the town adorned with the above costume. We regret to say that his courage did not meet with due reward, for long before his goal was reached he had to seek refuge from the crowd in the nearest house, from whence with out the unwonted garb,he emerged after the crowd had been dispersed by the police.
