The idea for the play came to Coward after he spent time with a zany Amer- ican actress and her husband in New York. Considering that this play is regarded as one of the best © comedies of modern English the- atre, it is surprising to learn that he wrote it in only three days. The action of the play takes one day, from Saturday afternoon _ . to Sunday morning — a day which the four visitors to the Bliss’ house will never forget. The Bliss family is made up of four ec- centrics, living in an age when the rules of behaviour governing a so- cial weekend were clearly spelled out for both the guests and hosts. The four guests, expecting this weekend to be what they are ac- customed to, suffer the trauma of having their plans for a quiet weekend thrown into disarray.
