March 13.-Reports received here of the recent general conference of Japanese Methodism indicate a growing feeling of confi- dence between Canadian mission- aries and their Japanese brethren. Not only has Canadian Methodism given generously to the building and rebuilding of churches, colleg- es, and orphansgee in Japan, but the Japanese delegates have elect- ed a Canadian as a general officer of their church. . Conference estimates were that one-fifth of the assets of the church were destroyed in the September disaster. Great increases in membership and Japanese givings were reported. A summary and interpretation of the proceedings follows: _ The fifth General Conference of the Japan Methodist Church will be remembered as the "barracks and earthquake" conference. lt is also memorable ns having made a Canadian a general officer of the church. Rev. P. G. Price, of Toronto, was made director of Social Service in recognition of his devotion and ability in work among the indust- rial population of Tokyo before, during and since the earthquake and confiagration of 1923. `Mr. Price is ii brother of Col. Hon. W. H. Price, Provincial Treasurer oi' Ontario, nnd was himself a mem- ber of his hrother's law firm be- fore entering on a philosophical und theological course of great dis- tinction at the University of Tor- onto and Victoria College I-l.ii-i election is n recognition of the fact that any Japanese Jealousy of foreign leadership is of the past and that the missionary who prov- es his qualification will be recog- nized as lender. in the confer- ence which so signnlly honored n representative of Canadian Metho- dism only seven of the fifty-eight members were non-Japanese. The confrence was convened at Aoyama ' Gakuin, the Methodist College in Tokyo. amidst the wreck of a once-beautiful campus. Great holes yawned in the walls of' Goucher Hall. The proud tower Eatguda I-inli was a pile of bricks, as also were the chapel and theo- logical school. Using the tempor- Leglslature Summary' (Continued from Page 1) was -method in the‘seti'~adulation of the Liberal party last year. But the -people‘s emphatic condemns- tion of the tBell Government's acts and .policy ought to have been suf- ficient evidence that such 'boasting was of no avail. and was out of place in view ut t.he changed -poli- tiesl situation. The Leader of the Opposition followed the .lead of the 'Patriot-only that and nothing more; and the 'Leader of -the Gov- ernment ihad no diflliculty in de- fending the 'position he occupies and in making clear eome of the matters misrepresented to the pub- lic. He expressed great regret that the Agricultural grant had been withdrawn ,by the -present Domin- ion Government.. At the same time he contended that the Technical School had not been so useful to our farmers and their sons as to justify its great exrpense, and that short courses throughout the coun- try would be attended lby better results with less cost. The vital importance of education-the train- ing of the minds of the youth., is the more pressing now that the field of human -knowledge hsis been so greatly widened and 'the -neces- sity of dealing with the incts of life is the more essential. A com- mittee oi‘ the Government had, he said, been appointed to investigate the educational situation of the Province, und much valuable in- formaitlon had -been gathered to the end that improvement maybe sup- iplied. As to emigration, this is not, he pointed out. the only Pro- vlnce that is suffering. The 'neigh- boring Provinces, too, are losing population. Encouragement and as- sistance had iheen given the Gov- ernment in this regard 'by the otllci- als of t-he -Canadian Nationul_`l'tail- ways. _'Premier lStewart,in this connec- tion, referred to the case of And- rew Fruiser llvlitcheli.
