Two of the deceased (Mrs. Edwin Rayner and a child of Mr. Edward Hogg) were taken in the same hearse and buried in the same cemetery on Saturday afternoon. Proofs of his death were forwarded from here by the mail of the 12th inst, and yesterday, jast twelve days after the proofs left Charlotte- town, Messrs. Warburton & Smallwood, the agents of the Society here, received a cheque from the Society's head office in New York for the amount of assurance and profits. The special train, bearing the remains’ of the Jate Hon. Thomas White and one hun- dred and seventy four members of the Commons and Senate, arrived from Ottawa at 1.30 p.m. The station was draped and the streets lined with peorle to pay the last tribute to the dead Minister. After service in St. George’s Church, the cortege, which was nearly a mile in length, proceed- ed to Mount Royal Cemetery. All the cabinet ministers, except Sir John Macdonald, Sir Hector Langevin and Sir Adolphe Caron were present. The Premier acted as pall bearer at Ottawa, ard felt unequal to the fatigue of going to Montreal. All the flags in the city are at half-mast, and tokens of mourning are gen- eral on all sides. ; ; irish County Courts. _—_— —_—_ MeCarthy’s ere Justin Motion. Lonpon, April 24. In the Commons to-day Justin McCarthy moved that the House adjourn on urgency to call attention to the depart- ure from the usual practice in Irish County Courts by increasing the sentences on appeal. Mr. McCarthy argued that the whole practice was opposed to all previous experiences. He asked the House to signify its objection to this new principle of appeal which closed the gates of mercy and opened the gates of wanton dispoticactions. After some debate the motion was defeated, 229 to 169. Montreal News. Montreat, April 24. It is understood that at the arts convoca- tion at McGill College on Monday, at which the Governor-General makes his last official appearance in Montreal, he will an- nounce a further gift from Sir Donald Smith for the endowment of the ladies college. A Director of the Bank of Montreal is authority for the statement that the earn- ings last year were amply sufficient to have declared one per cent. bonus in addition to the five per cent. dividend, and which he favored. When the statement appears it will be seen that a large balance had been carried forward, besides writing off con- siderable amounts, including $80,000 for a Chicago warehousing swindle. The Directors of the Canadian Bank of Commierce to-day declared a half yearly dividend at the rate of 7 per cent. per annum. The Imperial Patient. Bern, April 24. The Emperor's fever increased towards night. His condition causes alarm. A bulletin issued at 7.40 p. m., says the Emperor became feverish during the after- noon, but the fever abated somewhat towards evening. His general condition is comparatively satisfactory. Queen Vic- toria made three visits to-day to the sick room. The Emperor kept in bed, which he will doa day or two more, till he gets stronger. He has been in excellent spirits all day.
