Tue Moncton 7'imes publishes biographical sketches of the new members from the Mari- time Provinces, and includes A. C. McDonald, M. Mr. McDonald was one of the first representatives of King’s—he and Hon. D. Davies having been elected in 1873, upon the Island entering Contederation. Tue Railway is still blocked with snow. Mrs. FLANDRAU, who has been exhibited in New England as a giantess, died on Monday. She was born in Broadhead, Wis., a little over eighteen years ago. She was a pretty girl, despite the fact ot being almost six feet tali and weighing 516 lbs. It may sound strangely, But it is nevertheless true, that outside of the fact of being a general favorite with those about her, she was also the recipient of hon- érable matrimonial intentions on the part of ntlemen inevery phase of business life. any offers of marriage were made her, none of which she accepted, until in December last, when, while Barnam’s show was at the New York Hippodrome, she became the wife of Mr. John Flandrau, then engaged as a ticket seller for the combination. . S1r,—I notice that several of our city papers have published @ letter addressed to Finlay McNeill, Esq., from a gentleman in Portland, on the subject of sugar beet culture. I have been surprised that some of the editors have not exposed the arrant nonsence displayed in the said communication. The writer offers to ive five dollars per ton for beets delivered in ortland, and then goes on to say that one dollar per ton would pay freight and commis- sion. Now, a ton of beets is a little over thir- ty-three bushels, so that the freight, at one dollar per ton would be about three cents per bushel. Very moderate freights have been obtained of late years, but this would beat (beet) them all. A very low freight is twelve cents per bushel, which would amount to four dollars per ton. Commission at tive per cent. would be twenty tive cents, and duty—ten per cent. advalorem—fifty cents, leaving the large sum of twenty-five cents per ton, or about three quarters of a cent per bushel for the far- mers. I have not reckoned anything for in- surance, wharfage, weighing, etc.,and I think I may safely say it would take the remaining twenty-five cents to cover this, so that our farmers would be growing beets and carting them to the market for the fun of the thing. I do not think you need come to the Island, Mr. Gennert, as our farmers are not verdant | enough to grow beets solely for your benefit. | Yours truly. PLovuGHBoY. How countless and how varied Are the emotions called into action By that one brief word ! What other sound doth concentrate so much of sadness In so small a sphere ? Unknown in Heaven, ’tis well used on earth To teach fond man the weakness of his ties. if in this changing world it breathes of sad- ness E’en to those most sure of soon uniting That sadness, how immeasurably augmented When certainty fultilied hath banished hope, And naught remaineth but the last, last parting — The farewell to the dead ! Such am I come to take of thee, my brother ! Of thee ! who seem’d as strong and vigorous But a few days since, as thy young loved companion— Him, who now pallid by grief, stands sorrow- ing o'er thy bier. Oh! as I turn from those changed lineaments, rigid and lifeless, How swiftly memory, the mirror of the past, Gives back the banished hopes of earlier years, With all the freshness of reality. A thousand scenes, in which thou bore a part, Are passing bright before me. Again thy light laugh echoes in my ears ; Again thy bright form bounds before my eyes, But dark shadows fall ! And wrapt in gloom, those blessed images ! And in their stead arise the mournful fears, sy which we watched the fade from day to day, And the last look of dying love That sank so strangely sweet into the inmost soul. There to be cherished, like a precious gem. Unsullied ; unforgotten ; never to be erased Until its immortal sphere, Like thine, be passed and gone. And when all is o’er Then comes that tremulous thought—the soul ! the soul ! Oh earth ! full well I know thou wilt reclaim thine own. Ashes to ashes ! dust to dust return ; But the .life that animated that body—the soul !— Where abides it now ? Will the freed spirit, free from mortal ties, Slumber unconsciously the grave ? Or doth it even now Mingle with kindreds of beings Pure, and bright, and beautiful— An angel throng, wandering enraptured With that seraph host, Through realms of light, and life, and love- liness ” Oh blessed reality ! E’en those faint visions Of a happier world, imagination loves to pic- ture here. Vain! vain! is all conjecture ; vain the eye That feign would pierce the mystery of the Tomb— That mystery so dark, so impenetrable. Knough !—tho’ dead to us; he lives to God In His all-seeing eye, who gave him life ; Our brother is not lost, not perished; And who can tell But heaven's unerring wisdem did forsee He would have met with storms too harsh, In this cold world to bear— And so in pitying mercy called him hence, Far from sin’s guileful lure ? Then who would wish him back, Tho’ early taken, What selfish lova would see him here again ? Close, close the coffin o'er the happy dead, We give thy body to the silent dust, In sure and certain hope it will rejoin its pure spirit, And like a radiant robe encircling. Will share with their immortal joys forever. ——— = —_—- Died. This (Wednesday) morning, 26th inst., Hugh Eardley, infant sonof Mr. L. H. Davies, aged 6 months. HOTEL ARRIVALS. RANKIN HOUSE. P. J.
