Last Tuesday its readers were pati otly waiting for the most important ien of news for that day, viz: the result of the Murray Harbor Election the Patriot hod enly a short 5 line para- grap onthe event Oa Wednesday there was nothing concerning it, except a snap pish attack ou the uumusical tone of our articles regarding the grit defeat. To the Patriot our ar'icles were uncouth and disco dant, and the tone fell with remark- able d s-onance on the “ o’er well-tuved eir’ of the Putriot. We siucerely svym- pathize with the political sensitive tvmpanum trouble under which — the Patriot suffers, but can scarcely hope 1 alleviate it. The music of the tone of any article on the subject ot such a crushing grit defeat must neces- surily fall inharmoniously on the too teuder auditory verves of the Patriot -—— ao Fish Hatching. Eighteen years ago David Ennis, of Envi-fil, married a young lady of that place, aud soon after leit to seek his fortune in parts unknown. With the exception of one letter, no information has since been received from him until a few days ago, when the news reached Perth that he had returned, and his arrival “ followed close vpon,” as Hamlet says. In most of these Eastern countries they keep a holy idiot in each mosque | ‘for luck;” and perhaps Arabi Bey) imagines that he could fill the position. A man, said George the Third, is fit for any position he can get in England; and | bo doubt in the Turkish Empire the same | rule prevails. But the comic element of | the demand of Arabi Ber is the one that will prevail over all others for the mo- ment. ‘This fierce fighter, * This dangereus chief, this ruthless man, This head of a rebellions clan,” this disturber of the peace of Europe, in the character of a monk, is really too humorous a picture. _ om The Cavendish-Burke Murderer. From information gleaned at Dublin, it appears that Westgate, or O'Brien, the man arrested in Venezuela on his confession that he was concerned in the Phcenix Park muriers, isa Seorchman. On the day of the tragedy he sailed from Northwall for Swansea, at seven o'clock, p. m., or ten minutes before the tragedy occurred. Con- sequently he could not have been one of the assassins. Some of his friends were with him at Northwall for an hour before the’ vessel sailed. The authorities in Dablin, | are confident that Westgate is innocent, | though detectives will probably have to be | sent te bring him to Ireland, in order to satisfy public feeling. The New York Herald says:—‘‘On the morning of May | 6th, Westgate, who had been long out of work, was engaged, with other men, to work on the barque ‘‘ Ibex,” which was about to gail to Swansea the same evening. The ‘* Ibex” left Dublin at seven o'clock — twenty minutes before the murders were | committed—and Westgate was on board | some hours before. Very little importance | is attached to the confession. The police | are working up much better clues in Dub- | lin. 1am informed that Westgate did not give himself up, but that on the voyage ont he made several incriminating statements, and the captain placed him in custody, and on his arrival handed him over to the Vene. zuelan authorities.” on epee AN invention, comprising 40 lookin 7-glasses, has just been registered at the United States Fatent (flice, by a man named Calver. O closer examination it proved to be the body f an old man. Several attempts we: made by the deck hands of the steamer to secure the body with boat-hooks; but, not succeeding, they requested two boyr iamed Matthews and Sullivan, who wer rowing a boat out of the Ferry doek, t. ake the body ashore. They immediately caught the body with a boat-hoek, anc landed it on the slip alongside the Ferry Vharf. The po ice were informed of tlh iscovery, but up to the present tim ‘lershal Fiyon is unable to find anyon whe can id -ntify it. Che body is of a man apparently sixty years ofage. His face is totally disfigare: wd the trunk is swollen very large. Th legs are much bowed. The third anu fourth fingers of the left hand are cut off above the second joint, and the second tinger is bent to one side as though it had in time been severely crushed. The cloth. ng worn by the unfortunate man is a dw k ‘eel coat, dark vest, doeskin pants (very short), drugget shirt and flannel drawers lu the pocket of his coat were found a pan ot woollen mitts and handkerchief; 1m his pants a line, etc. The body has every ap earance of being in the river over a week Au inquest is being held by Dr. McLeod. ~~ <b oe Victoria, B. C. The climate of Victoria, B. C., has the purest summer climate of all places I have ever visited. There is absolutely no dis- comfort from heat felt here. The mercury seldom goes above 74°. Thick undercloth- ing and substantial woolen under-garments are worn the summer through. Yet the weather is bright and sunny, the air 1s pleasantly warm, aod the gardens are fillea sith flowers. Loxuriant growths of honey suckles cover the fences and verandas, an he roses are of astonishing size. Wid rose bushes border the rural lanes and hid: he fields with their dense masses of lew and blossom. All berries and small fruits fl.urish. The winter temperature is sin zularly mild for this high latitude, the owest ordinary rapge of the thermomete: being 10° above zero. The winter seasunr is long aud dreary, however, not much snow, but a great deal of raw, rainy, fogzy weather. For a summer resort for peop who lke rowing, fishing, yachting and riding under sunny skies and in an atmos phere like that of early October in New Evgland, Victoria has no equal. Some ‘me, when population and wealth acc uu late on the Pacific Coast, it will be much frequented by people from the parched heat tortured va'leys of California. — Letter in N. Y.
