Norton directed public attention by his letter to Tue Examiner of yesterday is one of great practicable importance to the prople of this Proviuce. Not in respect to oysters only, but in respect to every article that ie aud Sent aoroad the motto of ibe producer exporter should be “ Excelsior ”—and their aim, to win for themeelves and the Province a good character in the markets abroad. There can be no question what- ever that this Province has in recent years lost hundreds of thousands of dollars on account of carelessness in the projuction and shipment of oats. On the other band, there can be nodoubt that the care taken in the mavipulation of milk lately made into cheese bas already resulted in a con- siderable profit, and if continued will result in additional profit as year succeeds year. Intkis age of keen competition only the mau who takes esre can succeed, aud as its people are careful, so will the | prosperity of the coustry be. All those who labor to produce articles for sale in the markets of the world should be care- ful. One load of damp or badly cleaned oats will affect the character of the whole cargo mm the British market, and the character of the country from which it was sent. A few badly packed lobster cans, or carelessly made cheese, or seedy bales of hay ina large shipment may cause a loss of thousands upon thousands of dollars. These articles are approved or condemned in the market, not by the best samples but by the worst, and their character and the character of the country in which they are produced dep°nds upon he worst and not upon the best. Therefore, it is important that carelessness be not at all tolerated. The careless farmer, dairy- man or fisherman- should be discounten- anced, and all should strive to rell only products of gocd quality. Thoroughness has been a leading characteristic of all great men and all great nations. If the people of Prince Edward Island would grow in wealth they must be thorough in all their works, eae THE AXE AGAIN. Arter baving creditably served the Gov- ernment and the country for a quarter of a century, more or less, Mr. H. W. Ander- son, Mechanical Foreman of the P. EB. Island Railway, has, without cavee assigned, been dismissed at a month’s notice. Before Mr. Anderson was given charge of the railway workshops, accidents und delays on account of the failure of the locomotives were frequent. Since that time they have been #0 infrequent on that account that we cansot call to minda single one. Mr. Anderson is a geod citizen as well as a good foreman. He is in good health and in the vigor of manhood. There is no good cause for his dismissal ; and it is strongly suspected that some influential Liberal wants the patronage of hie position. THE SCOTT _— — ACT. ‘lue Guardian, this morniag, makes some startling announcements in regard to the time when the Scott Act will cease to be in force in Charlottetown. The Scott Actis still law. But the Guardian is all wrong as to the time when the act may be repealed by the Governor General in Council, and we would suggest to the editor tolook up the statute or make ivquiries of some person who knows something of the act before publishing euch misleading inaccuracies as appear in this morning’s issue. o-s 7+ oe Montreal Star: Alljof the recent dis- coveries of goldon this continent have been along the borders of the Dominien, a fact which shows that Canada is a gilt- edged country.
